Excerpt from Seventh Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1872 of Harvard College, 1872-1898 I want to apologize for troubling you all so much as I have in getting the necessary information, and to thank you for your prompt replies to my circulars. While some of the non-graduate members of the class have disappeared from our records, through my inability to trace them, I now have, I think, some knowledge of every graduate member, though some for one reason and some for another prefer to remain in retirement, and are unwilling that any thing concerning them should be published. Their wishes in the matter of course are to be respected; but I cannot help thinking that they fail to realize how much interest is taken in any one who has been connected with the class, and who spent with us so intimately four years of his life. My last report was published in 1894, and not many changes have taken place in our lives in the four years that have passed Since then. Most of the class are by this time pretty well settled in their various occupations, and, as the following pages will Show, are doing their Share in the active work of the world. Mr. Ware having been chosen Chairman, Mr. Russell moved that a committee be appointed by the Chair to draw up a series of resolutions. In accord ance with this motion, the Chair appointed Messrs. Rus sell, Osborne and Estabrooks, who presented the fol lowing: whereas, It has pleased Almighty God to remove from among us our beloved classmate, Calvin Edward Abbott, Resolved, That we deeply mourn his loss and deplore the early termination of a life so full of promise, but recognize in his death the hand of an inscrutable Provi dence. Its imperfections and short comings, so far as I am responsible for them, I trust you will attribute to lack of time, on my part, rather than of good-will. Your answers to my circular were, as usual, somewhat meagre, but it was pleasant to have all but four of our ninety-seven sur yiying graduates send some answer, however short. 1 wish to thank particularly those who wrote me letters. Not only for their contributions to the Report, but also for their kindly expressions of regard to me personally; they gave me great pleasure, and I am sorry to acknowledge them only in this general way. Our death rate continues very low; but this is small consola tion to the friends of E. H. Clark, Holden and Otis. Who never more will join us at Commencement-time. Une. Hundred and ninety six children have been born to the ('lass more than twice the present number of us survivors. It may cheer the hearts of the miserable little band of twenty bachelors to know that the girl baby to whom the Class cradle was given is well on her way to nineteen years, and that next year will find five other daughters of the Class eighteen years old; whether the hearts of these young ladies will be much cheered by the twenty bachelors is another question. Excerpt from Harvard College, Class of 1870: Secretary's Report, 1910 Tim prolonged and at one time alarming illness of the Secretary has delayed the issue of the Class Report. Everybody will rejoice with the Committee that the crisis seems to have been safely passed, and that the Secretary Will soon be able to resume his work. In the period between the Report for 1900 and that for 1905 there were nine deaths. In the period between 1905 and Commencement Day, 1910, Chamberlin, Fitz, Francis, Kidder, Nye, Sargent, and Wood ard were taken. Since Commencement, Chapin, Jordan, Rich, Rod man, and Worcester have died; bringing the number of living members to 86. Chapin's heart had troubled him for a number of years; Jordan, Rich, and Rodman had all been invalids for a considerable time; Worcester, whom we all remember as a type of perfect health, died sud denly. Rich went on the class automobile trip, and came to the dinner, and enjoyed them both. He said afterwards that, although the fatigue was considerable, the whole thing had been a great pleasure to him. Of the Temporary Members of the class, Badger has died since the last Report.
