We know a great deal about aggression, conflict, and war, but relatively little about peace, partially because it has been such a scarce phenomenon throughout history and in our own times. This volume's central purpose is to provide a clearly written, scholarly exploration of cultural variation regarding conflict resolution and in so doing, highlight certain alternatives to violence. It presents an interdisciplinary examination of how conflicts are perceived and handled in a variety of cultural settings. Drawing on data and models from anthropology, psychology, and political science, the chapters analyze conflict resolution across the societal spectrum, including cases from Western and non-Western traditions, complex and tribal societies, and violent and non-violent cultures. While demonstrating the extremely important impact of culture on conflict resolution processes, the book does not solely emphasize cultural specificity. Rather--through introductory chapters, section introductions, and a concluding chapter--the volume editors draw attention to cross-cultural patterns in an attempt to further the search for more general conflict principles. An explicit message throughout the book is that alternatives to violence exist. The volume demonstrates that at various levels--from the interpersonal to the international-- conflicts can be handled in ways that cause far less pain and destruction than violence. Chapters by psychologists discuss social and cognitive processes for facilitating the learning of alternatives to violence among children and youth. This volume examines the interrelationship of ecology, subsistence pat terns, and the observed genetic variation in human populations. Hence, the book is divided conceptually into the following categories: nonhuman primates, hunters and gatherers, nomads, swidden agriculturalists, peas ant farmers, religious isolates, and modern and urban aggregates. While many of these populations have experienced (and are experiencing) ac culturation as a result of contact with technologically more advanced groups, the genetic structures described in this volume attempt to recon struct the traditional patterns as well as genetic changes because of con tact. Most chapters also integrate biological (genetic), social, and de mographic data within an ecological frame thus presenting a holistic view of the population structures of ecologically distinct groups. The first chapter examines the body of early nonhuman primate lit erature that emphasized ecological determinism in effecting the popula tion structure of our primate ancestors-relatives. It also examines more recent literature (since 1970) in which it became apparent that greater flexibility exists in primate social structure within specific environmental frameworks. Thus, it appears that our nonhuman primate evolutionary heritage is not one of ecological determinism in social organization but one of flexibility and rapid change suggesting the evolutionary success of our species is based upon a system of flexibility and that social ad aptations can be accomplished in a number of diverse ways.

This international seminar was called "ISPsy 6th" with the theme "Religiosity and Cultural Diversity for Strengthening Mental Well-Being." From this seminar, it is hoped that preventive, curative, and even rehabilitative programs targeting holistic aspects of mental well-being will be present, providing benefits to the wider community. Manuscripts accepted for ISPsy 6th 2023 amounted to 62% of the total articles collected. This seminar featured several topics including Clinical Psychology, Organizational/Industrial Psychology, Educational Psychology, Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Psychometrics, Islamic Studies Related to Human Behavior, Social Science, Education, and Neuroscience. The keynote speech was delivered by Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, M.A.P as the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs. Speakers at this international seminar included Dr. Hanan Dover as the Vice President of the International Association of Muslim Psychologists (IAMP), Dr. Rania Awaad, M.D as the Director of the Stanford Muslim Mental Health & Islamic Psychology Lab, Dr. Nor Akmar Nordin as a lecturer in the Department of Psychology, School of Human Resource Development and Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and Retno Dwiyanti, M.Si., Ph.D as a lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. Modern Italian historiography has undergone a substantial revision in the last quarter of a century.
