Book Description
A searing memoir of an animal rights campaigner’s effort to stop Canada’s seal hunt, while handling domestic abuse and her partner’s long-term illness. When two government agents asked Karen Levenson whether she knew any terrorists or was one herself, she couldn’t have been more astonished. Passionately and professionally engaged in the struggle to end Canada’s seal hunt, she considered her efforts to persuade chefs to boycott Canadian seafood, her deep-dive investigation of hunt economics, and her campaign to end animal suffering not only as far from terrorism as possible, but the mission she’d been called upon to do since she was a child. But, as she relates in her vividly told and revelatory memoir, Levenson’s life has been marked by waves of unwarranted accusations and implicit or explicit violence: whether from government agencies, sealers, or even family members. Confessions of an Animal Rights Terrorist is at once an insider’s account of the decades-long attempt to end the seal hunt; an absorbing exploration of one woman’s growing awareness of animal cruelty and her emerging confidence, commitment, and knowledge; and a searingly honest memoir of domestic violence, caregiving, and the possibility of redemption. By turns infuriating, funny, and deeply moving, Confessions of an Animal Rights Terrorist reveals the extraordinary journey of an ordinary woman who comes face to face with breathtaking cruelty and does what she can to stop it.

The Newfoundland seal hunt was based on the harp and, to a lesser extent, hood seal species. The harp and hood are hair seals valued for their skin, fat, and hair. This document presents information on the harps and hoods. It examines the origins and early development of the hunt among Native peoples and the Europeans. It looks at the seal hunt, 1793-1861 and 1862-1939; the vessel-based hunt 1862-1939; the seal hunt since 1939; and the vessel-based hunt since 1939. It also provides an update to January 1988.

Book Description
JSA This is an exquisite book. The first flip-through reveals scores of spectacular color photos of harp or Greenland seals at various stages on their vast annual migration to and from the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Each picture by internationally acclaimed photographer Fred Bruemmer -- from the breathtaking two-page opener of a drifting iceberg to the final snapshot-size shot of a big-eyed pup -- is a gem. This is much more than a gorgeous coffee table book, though. Brian Davies' text is a delight to read -- clear, informative, sometimes humorous, often quite lyrical -- and is seamlessly interwoven with the photographs. Davies, who founded the international Fund for Animal Welfare during the sixties and helped accomplish the ban on baby seal hunting in Canada over a decade ago, tells the fascinating story of the seal's life cycle while managing to convey between the lines, without proselytizing, the need to safeguard these lovely mammals. Nor does he get smarmy. His description of the mating ritual, for instance, includes details about the deep scratches rival suitors inflict on each other along with a depiction of the sensual 'dance of love.' He tells how quickly a mother will respond to the call of her baby, and how thoroughly she will ignore a starving baby who is not her own. Granted, he anthropomorphizes shamelessly ('Near its mother the pup feels happy and secure ... ' p . 27), but who can look at the accompanying photo and deny that this is the perfect picture of comfort and bliss? Gloria Levine, Freelance Education Writer, Potomac, MD-
