Book Description
Some of the largest exporters of crude oil are colluding to bring down the price of oil, at great cost to their national coffers. Governments are violating core ideologies and national values. It falls to James Blackburn, a successful energy consultant based in Washington, DC, who advises oil traders, oil producing governments as well as the CIA and the US Department of Defense, to uncover a brewing conflict in the Middle East that explains it all. Blackburn finds himself influencing US policy at a time of great turmoil and change in the world. But he gets caught in a quandary as the interests of his various clients clash. His predicament worsens when he gets tangled in the activities of a secret organization aiming to undermine the corrupt regimes of the Gulf. As he juggles the demands of his clients, Blackburn is thrown into an emotional whirlwind. His transatlantic relationship with beautiful OPEC assistant Bianca Kraus is further complicated by a blossoming affection for another woman closer to home. Years later, Blackburn watches history repeat itself, and wonders whether the cataclysmic events that sprung up in the Middle East in recent years-the rise of the Islamic State, the crash in oil prices, and the destruction of Iraq and Syria-could have been predicted and even averted. With an inside look at foreign policy and the geopolitically charged oil industry, The Sacred Sands is a different kind of mystery, one that educates as it entertains, and warns us to beware our history, before it becomes our future.

America’s Religious Wars
Author: Kathleen M. Sands
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300245378
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 347
Book Description
How American conflicts about religion have always symbolized our foundational political values When Americans fight about “religion,” we are also fighting about our conflicting identities, interests, and commitments. Religion-talk has been a ready vehicle for these conflicts because it is built on enduring contradictions within our core political values. The Constitution treats religion as something to be confined behind a wall, but in public communications, the Framers treated religion as the foundation of the American republic. Ever since, Americans have translated disagreements on many other issues into an endless debate about the role of religion in our public life. Built around a set of compelling narratives—George Washington’s battle with Quaker pacifists; the fight of Mormons and Catholics for equality with Protestants; Teddy Roosevelt’s concept of land versus the Lakota’s concept; the creation-evolution controversy; and the struggle over sexuality—this book shows how religion, throughout American history, has symbolized, but never resolved, our deepest political questions.

Seaborn
Author: Michael Livingston
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1035905671
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 357
Book Description
The seven houses of the matriarchal Seaborn have plied the seas of the Fair Isles for centuries, trading among the islands and fending off the attacks by the fearsome Bone Pirate. But suddenly, out of the night sky, a common enemy appears – the Windborn, who come without warning to raid, burn, and kill. Hoping to turn the tide, Shae - the Bone Pirate's first mate - enacts a daring plan to fight her way aboard a Windborn vessel. The raid yields a prize - the airship's captain who is, to Shae's shock, a man. Together with a reluctant heroine, Bela, they learn the truth of their shared history: the Windborn and Seaborn come from the same people, split apart by blood magick when a race of immortal mechanical men betrayed their human makers. Now, these unlikely allies must make a desperate journey to confront the secrets of the past – and stop the dark magick at its source.

An Entangled Bank
Author: Joel Bartholemew Hagen
Publisher: Rutgers University Press
ISBN: 9780813518244
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 284
Book Description
This book was a revelation. I was simply enthralled by Joel Hagen's brilliance in reviewing the emergence of the discipline of ecosystem ecology (the study of biotic-abiotic interaction and nutrient flows in ecological systems). He does a magnificent job of introducing the personalities that midwived the new science. He explains their intellectual struggles, philosophical cross-currents, and different academic milieux. He also expertly illuminates sociopolitical context. Through his in-depth research he is able to dispel some misconceptions and truismsm, arriving at the heart of what made each scientist tick. Even when exploring some of the arcane figures and dead-end developments, he is so compelling that they become integral to the story, not sidetracks. His breadth of knowledge, his discerning inclusiveness, his clarity of thought, all make _An Entangled Bank_ a stimulating read. Very often in science courses we are presented only with the canonical "state of the science," having to swallow its agglomerated whole free of context. Hagen reveals the wisdom of understanding intellectual foundations. Through study of the origins and development of a science, we may better grasp the received tenets of current scientific understanding. As a young science, ecosystem ecology has a historical context that is relatively accessible to us, if less romantic than a tale of the origins of astronomy might be. A peek into the labs and offices of botanists, limnologists, and biogeochemists might not seem like the acme of excitement. Hagen inspires us with his insights. He makes his subject meaningful to us. Though it is not pleasure reading by any stretch, its clear-sighted intellectual vigor makes _An Entangled Bank_ pure enjoyment.
