Does this finding constitute evidence that learning resulted from the feedback? Differing answers play an important role in the ongoing debate over the effectiveness of error correction, suggesting a need for empirical investigation. In this study, two groups of EFL learners were asked to write an in-class narrative. Their papers were collected, revised and returned to them in the next session. Half of the students had their errors underlined and used this feedback in the revision task while the other half did the same task without feedback. Results matched those of the previous studies: the underlined group was significantly more successful than the control group. Later on, the students were identically taught in 9 sessions. In the 12th session, however, the students were asked to write the same narrative they had produced in the first and second session as a measure of long-term learning. On this measure, the two groups were virtually identical. Thus, successful error reduction during revision is not a predicator of learning as the two groups differed dramatically on the former but were indistinguishable on the later. Improvements made during revision are not evidence on the effectiveness of correction for improving learners’ writing ability in the long run.

The study examines the effect of unfocused vs. focused written corrective feedback on the writing accuracy of Iranian advanced EFL learners.The findings revealed that the participants in the focused group improved in their writing accuracy although the improvement was not significant. However, it was found that the unfocused group performed worse in comparison to the scores obtained from their pre-test. This might adhere to some researchers' claims that corrective feedback might not be effective since learners' acquisition of various grammatical features is slow and complicated and that when feedback on various structures is provided, learners might be unable or unwilling to make use of them effectively while composing a new piece of writing.

This study compared the impact of two types of teacher written feedback on Iranian EFL learners' writing ability and their ability of tense consistency in L2 writing.After administering a standardized language proficiency test(Preliminary English Test),62 homogenous participants were assigned to the control(direct-only correction)and experimental(direct metalinguistic correction) group.The comparison of the groups on the writing pretest confirmed the homogeneity of the subjects before the instruction.During 10 sessions of instruction, the control group received direct-only correction by indicating the location of an error and the provision of the correct form, while the experimental group received direct metalinguistic correction by indicating the location of an error, writing the correct form, and providing metalinguistic comments explaining the reason behind correction.After the treatment, both groups took part in the writing and delayed writing posttests, respectively.The results indicated that direct metalinguistic correction was more effective in the improvement of EFL learners' writing ability and their ability of tense consistency and this improvement was retained over 3 w

This study described the effectiveness of engaging learners fully and actively with written corrective feedback (WCF) in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in the Lebanese International University. In addition, this study aimed to investigate the role of WCF in the development of EFL learning, focusing on the development of learners writing skills and writing strategies. Recent studies have provided empirical evidence to support the positive role of feedback in students foreign language (FL) leaning mainly in the areas of writing skills and writing strategies development. In order to increase students awareness about feedback, I have investigated students attitudes and behavior towards WCF throughout a longitudinal descriptive study. The data collection consisted of the participants essays, following the course syllabus, one feedback questionnaire, and two writing strategies questionnaires. Participants essays were grades according to the Six-Trait writing rubrics, and the mistakes were numbered. The analysis of the quantitative data required both descriptive statistics and inferential statistics tools. Finally, the results presented the development of learners feedback awareness, their writing skills and their writing strategies. These findings reflected the literature that expressed the importance of raising learners awareness about WCF in a foreign language classroom, with a focus on textual and linguistic awareness. Pedagogical implications, further research, and recommendations are presented in the end of the study.
