As a boy playing marbles when a student at Siloam Academy, Surry County; as a cowy on a Texas frontier; as a farmer, tilling the soil in the valleys of Missouri; as a brave soldier and Captain in the Civil War, contending for human rights, deal ing with human life - the last to surrender at Appomattox; as a husband and father; as a merchant behind the counter: as a lawyer, pleading at the bar; as a Collector of Internal Revenues. Working for the Government; as a Com missioner, appointed bv the President of the United States, to investigate Indian Titles in the far away State of Minnesota; as a candidate for Con gress, defending democracy against an able opponent; as a member of the Legislature. Demanding that the railroads should pay a greater revenue to the Commonwealth: and later. As a State Senator, protecting the railroads from unjust legislation; as President of the Board of Trustees of this Institu tion from its beginning, he has done his dutv as he saw it. Bravelv and boldly, without fear and without favor. To me it is an inspiration to see him giving the last years of his long, useful life to the cause of education. He has dedicated his time. His energies. And his talents to the building lof this school, to the end that useful knowledge maxr be disseminated - that better opportunities may be put in the pathwav of every youth in this mountain land. His parents came to Boone and for years had charge of the Coffey Hotel which made and maintained a very fine reputation. Mr. Coffey was graduated with the A. B. Degree from 'ake Forest College in 1890. He studied law under the master, Colonel G. N. Folk, and was admitted to the bar in 1892. As a lawyer he stood high and won an enviable reputation for sincerity and honesty in his profession. Mr. Coffey married Miss Annie Parks of Virginia, a noble woman.
