It provides details of how the probabilistic models of aircraft flight dynamics, satellite communication system measurements, environmental effects and radar data were constructed and calibrated. The probability distribution was used to define the search zone in the southern Indian Ocean. The book describes particle-filter based numerical calculation of the aircraft flight-path probability distribution and validates the method using data from several of the involved aircraft’s previous flights. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was a scheduled international passenger flight that took off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia on March 8, 2014. The plane was supposed to arrive at Beijing Capital International Airport in China but, approximately one hour after takeoff, the plane disappeared from air traffic control radar screens. The loss of communication with the plane, coupled with its sudden disappearance, sparked one of the largest search and rescue operations in aviation history, but the fate of the Boeing 777-200ER and its 239 passengers and crew members remains unknown to this day. The investigation into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has been marked by false leads, erroneous information and conspiracy theories. Despite the extensive search operation, no one knows what happened to the plane. The official report from the Malaysian government stated that the plane veered off course due to manual control inputs and that it ultimately crashed into the southern Indian Ocean. However, the lack of physical evidence and the possible presence of multiple contributing factors has led to skepticism concerning the official explanation. Despite the uncertain fate of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, the event has spurred major changes in the aviation industry, including enhanced safety regulations and technological advancements in aircraft tracking and communication.
