The Neutron Irradiation Effect on the Mechanical Properties and Structure of Beryllium
Author: RM. Bagautdinov
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Materials
Languages : en
Pages : 15
Book Description
The results of an investigation into the effects of neutron irradiation on the mechanical properties and structure of beryllium are presented. Irradiation was performed in the BOR-60 reactor up to doses of 0.7-1.1 x 1022 n/cm2 (E > 0.1 MeV) at irradiation temperatures of 350°C, 400°C, 520°C, 780°C. Two modifications of RF beryllium, i.e. DShG-200 and TShG-56, were chosen for investigation.

The Influence of Neutron Irradiation on the Properties of Beryllium
Author: RG. Fleck
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Beryllium
Languages : en
Pages : 14
Book Description
The room temperature mechanical properties of unirradiated hot and cold isostatically pressed high purity beryllium and Zircaloy-2 are compared in three-point bend tests. For ram displacement rates of 1 mm min-1 beryllium exhibits comparable ductility (outer fibre strain) to that obtained with Zircaloy. However, for faster ram displacement rates (6.25 mm s-1) the beryllium specimen fractured in an elastic manner. Fast (E > 1 MeV) neutron irradiation of a beryllium specimen at 350 K to a fluence of 6.44 x 1024 n m-2 results in a negative growth strain of 0.03% and a loss in ductility. No visible radiation damage was detected by transmission electron microscopy and the observed irradiation growth strain is attributed to the formation of submicroscopic defect clusters.
