Responses to Performance Mistakes in Competition of Male and Female Starter and Nonstarter Soccer Players
Author: Katherine J. McLaren

ISBN:
Category : College athletes
Languages : en
Pages : 218
Book Description
Abstract: The present investigation was designed to determine whether differences existed between male and female and starter and nonstarter soccer players after making an error during competition. Soccer self-efficacy was also investigated. Participants included male and female NCAA Division III varsity soccer players (N = 151). Participants completed the Reactions to Mistakes During Competition Scale (RMDC; Frost & Henderson, 1991) as well as a one-item self-efficacy measure. Self-efficacy scores for males were higher than scores for females, and self-efficacy scores for starters were higher than scores for nonstarters. Females had higher scores than males for the Social Concerns subscale of the RMDC. Females scored higher than males on three of the individual items of the RMDC, and males scored higher than females for one item. Nonstarters scored higher than starters on one item. Possible reasons for gender differences in self-efficacy include gender socialization and anxiety levels. Reasons for few differences found between starters and nonstarters are coach philosophies and the nature of the game of soccer. Suggestions for future research are also discussed.
