Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 4: October 1, 1929 The necessary sum not having been raised by July Ist last, the time has been extended and a vigorous and intensive campaign will go on until the first of January, 1930. There is a faithful group of Alumni who, besides giving all they could afford to give, are freely giving their time to the cause. Will not those who have thus far failed to respond come, not only to the aid of the College, but to the assistance of this gallant band who are both working and giving? Surely the incentive should be great enough for any son of the College - that of having a part in putting one Of the Oldest, most useful and most honored of institutions in the country beyond the possibility of want and where it can go forward with ever - increasing usefulness to the state and to the nation. We feel confident that no loyal son who would pause to think will let SO great an Opportunity for service go unheeded. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 6: July, 1932 These occasions were attended by people for some miles around who were largely attracted by the music, for the opportunity to hear a good brass band was rare. These were the days when the radio had not been dreamed of and even the phonograph was far from perfected. A journey even from Farmville to hampden-sydney usually took from one to one and one-half hours except when the roads were especially good and the team unusual. It was not uncommon to see booths placed in the grounds near the church where food could be obtained for those who had driven in only for the day. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 29: October, 1954 The book is an important one for the person concerned with physical education, and a useful one for the average citizen; indeed, a fascinating one. However, the said average citizen should be warned that he is going to be painfully reminded of his shortcomings in the field of physical fitness. If he is aroused to do something about it, so much the better. Perhaps a selection on the values of cutting the grass might have been included. Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 10: April, 1916 The days of our ancestors were full of action, and even we of the last and near middle twentieth century are thrilled When we read of the history making events in which our colonial forefathers moved. Nevertheless, we could wish that there might be more of tran quillity, less rush, and less haste; and that now and then, at least, there could be restful pauses between acts, as it were, before the curtain rises on another scene.
