Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 27: July 1953 The results are equally reassuring. Hampden-sydney graduates have received generous fellowships for study in the business field. They have entered leading Schools of Business Administration and done well. They have gone into large businesses and risen high in the organizations. They have managed their own businesses with success. We know of one recent graduate who went directly into a large and well known business institution in Richmond. There, competing with graduates of one of the best business schools in the country, he has shot ahead. The others had to learn the business methods of that particular concern, even as he did. But at the same time he had acquired from his education many other things that these men had neglected. Res i/lm loquitur. There is another hampden-sydney graduate, a little Older, in business for himself. He insists that the hampden-sydney plan of education should not be tampered with. Success in business, he says, depends mainly, not on business training, but on perspiration. Accountants can be readily hired; a good education is not so easy to come by. These things are written that hampden-sydney alumni may know that preparation for a business career is not neglected at the College. Within the liberal arts framework, the basic business courses are here; the general education is here as well. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 14: July, 1940 Moreover, while none of us wish to see our soldiers fighting on foreign fields, it is a grievous misconception of the situation to insist that in no event should we send an expeditionary force. As a practical proposition, the farther we can keep the battle from our own shores the better. If it should promote our safety to meet the enemy on foreign soil, we should not hesitate; and to those of our young men who may be called upon to make the supreme sacrifice, it would be a matter of indifference whether they fell fighting on foreign soil or in the fields surrounding their own homes. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 21: January 1947 This compilation contains a brief foreword, an ex pression of appreciation of the generosity of Mr. J. E. Garland who made the work possible, and Of the kindness of some ladies who have aided in the task; the body of the narrative (142 pages); an appendix of twenty-four pages; an Index of five pages and a Bibliography of four pages. All this material is typewritten in double Spacing, except the quotations used, which are in single space type. The whole is fully documented; footnotes at the bottom of the pages give references to the authorities mentioned in the Bibliography; a different notation marks the notices in the Appendix, a collection of valuable material which even if standing alone would abundantly justify publi cation. Probably this is the author's opus magnum, though his facile pen has written through the years much history and biography of a high order of excellence. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 3: April 1, 1929 One of the first matters to be decided by the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee of the campaign was the form of the appeal. It has been felt that the appeal of the College for support is not alone to the Presbyterian Church but to the South generally, and to the State of Virginia in particular. Therefore, in the literature prepared, particular emphasis has been laid upon the service which the College has rendered the nation and the State, besides the quality of men She has given to education, to the church, to medicine and the law. By putting the appeal on this broad basis it is hoped to interest the widest possible field. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
