The three-body heterogeneous and wall recombination coefficients for atomic oxygen were measured using an electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer to monitor the time dependence of the atomic oxygen concentration. This measurement was made for a pressure range of from .224 to 1.10 torr using pyrolysis of ozone as a source of oxygen atoms. The three-body heterogeneous rate constant, k1, with molecular oxygen as the third body was determined independent of ozone concentration to be (5.43 ± . 08) x 10-34 cc 2 molecule-2 sec-1 The wall recombination efficiency, y, for a fused metaphosphoric acid-sodium metaphosphate mixture, the wall coating, was found to be 9.1 x 10-6. The recombination coefficient, k1, resulting from a computer fit of the data to the usual recombination model is compared to literature values obtained from discharged oxygen, ozone pyrolysis, and chemiluminescence measurements. The role that ozone concentration plays throughout the atomic oxygen decay and the possible effects of its neglect is discussed.

OXYGEN WAS PARTLY DISSOCIATED BY A MICROWAVE DISCHARGE IN STATIC EXPERIMENTS, AND THE ABSOLUTE CONCENTRATION OF ATOMS WAS DETERMINED WITH A Wrede gage. The rate of recombination was measured by observing the radiation emitted as a result of the reaction of O atoms with a trace of NO2. An upper limit of 2.5 x 10 to the 14th power cc sq./mole sq. sec was established for the rate constant at 350 K of the reaction O + O + O2 yields O2 + O2. Since this upper limit is 1/3 to 1/2 times the value found in shocktube experiments for the same rate constant at 3500 K, it is concluded that the rate constant increases slowly with temperature instead of varying as an inverse power of absolute temperature, as has conventionally been assumed. In the same experiments, the rate constant for the reaction O + O2 + O2 yields O3 + O2 was found to be 1.1 x 10 to the 14th power cc sq./mole sq. sec at 350 K, in excellent agreement with other recent determinations. Recombination was strongly catalyzed by OH radicals in accordance with the mechanism O + OH + O2 yields HO2 + O2 and O + HO2 yields OH + O2. The rates of these reactions are reported. (Author).

A steady state model for oxygen atom recombination for temperatures from 300 K to 2000 K on a silicon dioxide surface was developed based on the Langmuir-Rideal heterogeneous recombination mechanism. The bonding of atomic oxygen to the surface and the thermal desorption of atomic oxygen from the surface were also included in the model. The hypothesis was made that the gas-phase oxygen atoms combine directly with the oxygen atoms that constitute the silicon dioxide surface, with other gas-phase oxygen atoms replacing the lost atoms that were bonded on the silicon dioxide surface matrix. The model agrees with the experimental data that is available in the literature, and provides an insight into the processes that control the recombination as a function of temperature. A set of two-dimensional, steady-state, laminar boundary-layer calculations was made using explicit numerical methods to demonstrate the use of this model and to explore the rational limits which may be placed on the role of catalysis for oxygen recombination on a silicon dioxide surface like that of the Space Shuttle. The predicted catalycity of the silcion dioxide surface did reduce the overall heating below that which would be predicted by a fully catalytic surface.
