Excerpt from The Recent War With Spain: From an Historical Point of View In discussing the historical significance of the recent war with Spain, I am conscious of the difficulties in the way of reaching satisfactory judgments concerning great events that lie partly in the experience of the immediate past. We know less about this conflict than the scholars of the next generation will know. Its significance, like the significance of any important contemporary social movement, is not yet unfolded, and consequently no man may read it. Whatever judgment is rendered to-day touching the late war between the United States and Spain is only such a judgment as may be revealed by the light of the history of these two nations; and in this light the struggle appears as a phase of the centuries-old conflict that has arisen from antagonistic national qualities and divergent national policies.
