Author: Paul Ricoeur
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226713520
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 217
Book Description
In volume 1 of this three-volume work, Paul Ricoeur examined the relations between time and narrative in historical writing. Now, in volume 2, he examines these relations in fiction and theories of literature. Ricoeur treats the question of just how far the Aristotelian concept of "plot" in narrative fiction can be expanded and whether there is a point at which narrative fiction as a literary form not only blurs at the edges but ceases to exist at all. Though some semiotic theorists have proposed all fiction can be reduced to an atemporal structure, Ricoeur argues that fiction depends on the reader's understanding of narrative traditions, which do evolve but necessarily include a temporal dimension. He looks at how time is actually expressed in narrative fiction, particularly through use of tenses, point of view, and voice. He applies this approach to three books that are, in a sense, tales about time: Virgina Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway; Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain; and Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past. "Ricoeur writes the best kind of philosophy—critical, economical, and clear."—Eugen Weber, New York Times Book Review "A major work of literary theory and criticism under the aegis of philosophical hermenutics. I believe that . . . it will come to have an impact greater than that of Gadamer's Truth and Method—a work it both supplements and transcends in its contribution to our understanding of the meaning of texts and their relationship to the world."—Robert Detweiler, Religion and Literature "One cannot fail to be impressed by Ricoeur's encyclopedic knowledge of the subject under consideration. . . . To students of rhetoric, the importance of Time and Narrative . . . is all too evident to require extensive elaboration."—Dilip Parameshwar Gaonkar, Quarterly Journal of Speech

From Beauty to Compassion, from Pleasure to Terror, from Resignation to Joy -- here is an insightful exploration of the rich diversity of human qualities. J. Ruth Gendler's evocative book has as its cast of familiar characters our own emotions, brought to life with a poet's wisdom and an artist's perceptive eye. In The Book of Qualities' magical community, Excitement wears orange socks, Faith lives in the same apartment building as Doubt, and Worry makes lists of everything that could go wrong while she is waiting for the train. In portraying the complexities of the psyche, Gendler uses the Qualities to bridge the distinctions between literature and psychology, and has created an original work that challenges us to look at our emotions in new and inspiring ways.

It Is Time
Author: Marie Renshaw
Publisher: Page Publishing Inc
ISBN: 1645848949
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 47
Book Description
It Is Time is a series of powerful writings that is a calling for examination of oneself, one's life, and one's entire existence. It Is Time questions if we are promoting growth or destruction, projecting life or projecting death, bringing forth hope or discouragement to not only those we encounter but to our loved ones, whom we claim to so very much cherish. It compels the reader to question, are they living or merely existing in this world? This small collection of works will have the reader question things about themselves that many go through life and never consider. It Is Time is a unique series in that it "wakes" people from the apparent sleep they have unknowingly been in for sometimes decades. Many times people will say they seek change; It Is Time not only seeks it but finds it, embraces it, then promotes it. It Is Time will leave its readers with a newfound hope—that there is a solution to all the chaos we all currently find ourselves suffocated by.
