Using data from the 2011 Crossroads Charlotte Social Capital Community Survey, this thesis examines the relationships of neighborhood diversity and interracial contact with interracial and ethnic trust for the three largest racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. (non-Hispanic Whites, African Americans, and Hispanics). Social identity theory maintains that individuals will have lower trust of out-group members. However, contact hypothesis states that interracial contact may help improve attitudes towards out-group members. To test assumptions from social identity theory, I first hypothesize that as the percent of neighbors with the same racial/ethnic identity increases, the level of interracial and ethnic trust decreases. To test assertions from contact hypothesis, I also hypothesize that as interracial contact increases, it follows that the level of interracial and ethnic trust also increases. I use multiple linear regression models to test both hypotheses. The key finding is that, relative to racial and ethnic diversity, interracial contact is a more reliable predictor of interracial and ethnic trust. Racial and ethnic diversity, particularly homogeneity, only matter for predicting trust in Whites.
