Book Description
This is the second work of a set of two volumes on the phenomena of wave propagation in nonreacting and reacting media. The first, entitled Wave Propagation in Solids and Fluids (published by Springer-Verlag in 1988), deals with wave phenomena in nonreacting media (solids and fluids). This book is concerned with wave propagation in reacting media-specifically, in electro magnetic materials. Since these volumes were designed to be relatively self contained, we have taken the liberty of adapting some of the pertinent material, especially in the theory of hyperbolic partial differential equations (concerned with electromagnetic wave propagation), variational methods, and Hamilton-Jacobi theory, to the phenomena of electromagnetic waves. The purpose of this volume is similar to that of the first, except that here we are dealing with electromagnetic waves. We attempt to present a clear and systematic account of the mathematical methods of wave phenomena in electromagnetic materials that will be readily accessible to physicists and engineers. The emphasis is on developing the necessary mathematical tech niques, and on showing how these methods of mathematical physics can be effective in unifying the physics of wave propagation in electromagnetic media. Chapter 1 presents the theory of time-varying electromagnetic fields, which involves a discussion of Faraday's laws, Maxwell's equations, and their appli cations to electromagnetic wave propagation under a variety of conditions.

Book Description
The propagation of waves along and across the boundary between two media with different characteristic velocities is much more complicated when the source is on or near the boundary than when it is far away and the incident waves are plane. Examples of waves generated by localized sources near a boundary are the electromagnetic waves from the currents in a dipole on the surface of the earth and the seismic waves from a slip event in a fault in the earth's crust like the San Andreas fault in California. Both involve a type of surface wave that is called a lateral wave in electro magnetics and a head wave in seismology. Since the two are analogous and the latter is more easily visualized, it is conveniently used here to introduce and describe this important type of surface wave using the data of Y. Ben Zion and P. Malin ("San Andreas Fault Zone Head Waves Near Parkfield, CA," Science 251, 1592-1594, 29 March 1991).

Book Description
A representation in terms of explicitly given generalized eigenfunctions is obtained for the semigroup S(t) = exp(-ixt) solving the Cauchy problem for the time-dependent Maxwell equations in the case of two distinct media filling the upper and lower half spaces of R3, whereby the upper medium is loss-free, while the lower has finite conductivity. The solution u = S(t)f, fED(1), can be written in the form u = uo+uo+uso+us++us-+op+up. Here uo and uo are, respectively, static and quasistatic parts of the solution: us+ and us+ consists of a superposition of AH modes -- modes whose frequencies have no real part and thus do not propagate; uxx consist of superpositions of surface-wave modes, propagating in opposite directions according to + or -; uop and up are superpositions of plane-wave modes having the frequencies of the upper and lower media respectively. The structure of the AH and surface-wave components is determined: the are essentially scalar waves, and it is shown how such waves can be constructed explicitly from solutions of a simple problem for the scalar wave equation.

Book Description
Excerpt from Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves From an Arbitrary Source Through Inhomogeneous Stratified Atmospheres The theory of this paper will, as remarked above, likewise entail calcu lation problems. At the present time, all that can be said is that it has been possible in other problems of applied mathematics to obtain good approximations to the values of integrals by familiar methods, such as the method of steepest descent6, where series solutions have led to tremendously long calculations and to very slow convergence. Book Description
Waves in Layered Media focuses on the theory of the propagation of elastic and electromagnetic waves in layered media. This book presents a complete report of Soviet researches on wave propagation through layered media. Organized into six chapters, this book starts with an overview of the theory of wave reflection from layers and interfaces. This text then examines the some of the representations and methods, which are common to different branches of physics. Other chapters define the reflection reduction of optical waves as the lowering of the reflection coefficient at the air–glass boundaries by depositing thin layers of several materials on the glass. This book discusses as well the field of a concentrated source situated in a layered-inhomogeneous medium, which is one of the main problems in modern radiophysics, acoustics, and the physics of the Earth's crust. The final chapter deals with wave propagation in layered-inhomogeneous media. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, scientists, and physicists.
