Ancient Mesopotamian Materials and Industries
Author: Peter Roger Stuart Moorey
Publisher: Eisenbrauns
ISBN: 9781575060422
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 456
Book Description
This is the first systematic attempt to survey in detail the archaeological evidence for the crafts and craftsmanship of the Sumerians, Babylonians, and Assyrians in ancient Mesopotamia, covering the period ca. 8000-300 B.C.E. As creators of some of the earliest farming and urban communities known to us, these people were among the first pioneers of many crafts and skills that remain fundamental to modern ways of life. Many of the raw materials for crafts had to be imported from outside the river valley of the Tigris and Euphrates, providing an unusually sensitive indicator of the commercial and cultural contacts of Mesopotamia. In this book, Dr. Moorey reviews briefly the textual evidence, and then goes on to examine in detail the material evidence for a wide range of crafts using stones, both common and ornamental, animal products--from hippopotamus ivory to ostrich egg-shells--ceramics, glazed materials and glass, metals, and building materials. With a comprehensive bibliography, this will be a key work of reference for archaeologists and those interested in the early history of crafts and technology, as well as for specialist historians of the ancient Near East.

Seals and Sealing in the Ancient World
Author: Marta Ameri
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108173519
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 524
Book Description
Studies of seals and sealing practices have traditionally investigated aspects of social, political, economic, and ideological systems in ancient societies throughout the Old World. Previously, scholarship has focused on description and documentation, chronology and dynastic histories, administrative function, iconography, and style. More recent studies have emphasized context, production and use, and increasingly, identity, gender, and the social lives of seals, their users, and the artisans who produced them. Using several methodological and theoretical perspectives, this volume presents up-to-date research on seals that is comparative in scope and focus. The cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approach advances our understanding of the significance of an important class of material culture of the ancient world. The volume will serve as an essential resource for scholars, students, and others interested in glyptic studies, seal production and use, and sealing practices in the Ancient Near East, Egypt, Ancient South Asia and the Aegean during the 4th-2nd Millennia BCE.

The Stamp-seals of Ancient Cyprus
Author: A. T. Reyes
Publisher: Oxford University School of Archaeology
ISBN:
Category : Antiques & Collectibles
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
Glyptics had a long history in Cyprus; from at least the fourteenth century BC, the island produced seals in significant quantities in a variety of shapes and styles. The cylinders from the Late Bronze Age are well documented, but the stamp-seals which came after them, and preceded the gem industry of classical times, have previously been neglected. This study examines these in order to discover what they reveal about society at the end of the Late Bronze Age when they first appear and the subsequent Iron Age when they proliferated and moved into common use within the island. Reyes discusses the different designs and styles of stamp-seals and their development, local tradition and foreign influence, including a detailed discussion of evidence for Phoenician influence. Also examined are materials and manufacture and the different uses they were put to - inscriptions, sealings, votive practices and personal adornment. There are several appendices and a glossary of terms.

ISBN: 1922235334
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 658
Book Description
Asian Horizons is published in honour of the great scholar of Asia, Professor Giuseppe Tucci (1894–1984). Through the work of present-day scholars, both senior and emerging, this volume represents their efforts to maintain the impetus of the profound legacy Tucci left. Renowned to this day as a founding scholar in an extraordinarily wide variety of disciplines, as well as being an explorer of hitherto largely unknown lands, such as Tibet, Tucci gained a deep knowledge of Asia through a familiarity with its people, places and literature. His contribution to modern scholarship is nothing less than remarkable. The volume reflects the broad variety of topics in which Tucci himself displayed deep interest and serves as an homage to his work.
