Identification and classification of a private Danish collection of seals, which were acquired in Baghdad over a number of years more than 30 years ago. The collection covers a period extending from the late Ubaid to the Sasanian dynasty, c. 4000 BC -- 642 AD, and includes twenty-five cylinder seals from the Late Uruk period to Early Dynastic I, nine Early Dynastic II-III seals, eleven Akkadian and Post-Akkadian, six Neo-Sumerian, eight Old Babylonian, three seals of the second half of the second millennium BC, thirteen Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian stamp and cylinder seals, three seals of the second half of the first millennium BC, three bullae and a stamp seal of Seleucid date, thirty Sasanian stamp seals, and finally four fragmentary seals of uncertain date. The seals are listed in chronological order by period. The middle chronology has been used for dating.

This is the first systematic attempt to survey in detail the archaeological evidence for the crafts and craftsmanship of the Sumerians, Babylonians, and Assyrians in ancient Mesopotamia, covering the period ca. 8000-300 B.C.E. As creators of some of the earliest farming and urban communities known to us, these people were among the first pioneers of many crafts and skills that remain fundamental to modern ways of life. Glyptics had a long history in Cyprus; from at least the fourteenth century BC, the island produced seals in significant quantities in a variety of shapes and styles. The cylinders from the Late Bronze Age are well documented, but the stamp-seals which came after them, and preceded the gem industry of classical times, have previously been neglected. This study examines these in order to discover what they reveal about society at the end of the Late Bronze Age when they first appear and the subsequent Iron Age when they proliferated and moved into common use within the island. Reyes discusses the different designs and styles of stamp-seals and their development, local tradition and foreign influence, including a detailed discussion of evidence for Phoenician influence. Also examined are materials and manufacture and the different uses they were put to - inscriptions, sealings, votive practices and personal adornment. There are several appendices and a glossary of terms.
