The History of Europe since the end of the fifteenth century, was originally announced to be completed in six volumes: considering such a work as a desideratum in English literature, a translation of it was contemplated, not to be commenced however till the publication of the original should be somewhat advanced; but when the fifth volume was found to bring the history only to 1660, it became evident that the whole would be of much greater extent than originally proposed.
