Book Description
Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Thomas Moore: With the Life of the Author What need of an elaborate criticism of one whose genius won its own way to the highest fame As a lyrist, what age or nation has produced his superior? The vigour of Burns has not Moore's exquisite polish the grace and glow of Berenger has not half his wit. Both masters in political satire, that of Moore was at times wrapped up in figures with inimitable skill. As a patriot he was independent, honest, uncom promising; and his opinions, whether right or wrong, he maintained at all hazards. He stooped for no favours; he fettered his free action by no obligations. He loved aristocratic society, but it was for the refinement and accomplishments to be found in that order; and let us remember that the strength and purity of his affections for his own kin were neither weakened or sullied by his intercourse with the great, and that he could decline a dinner with the viceroy to dine at home with his sister Ellen on salt fish and biscuit. He was an idolizing father and a fond husband; and though the records in his journal tell of frequent visits, which the quieter tastes of his wife declined, yet the numerous entries, spreading over days and weeks, of worked at home, are volumes of calm and 'happy domesticity. Perhaps, after all, the wonder is that the worship of his intellect, the flatteries and fascinations of men and women, did not utterly spoil him. That they did not is a proof of a heart sound at the core, of a nature noble and self-respecting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Poetical Works by Thomas Moore: With a Life of the Author These are great truths that every man of genius should see, acknowledge, and act upon. Nobles can confer no no bility on him: he bears his patent of honour in his own bosbm; the escutcheon of genius is his in the broad and exalted brow. He should remember this; and the world will not then forget it. Tith this idea within him and be fore him, his work will be done the more nobly; and the public which is made what it is by him, - efi%minatc through his effeminacy, corrupt through his corruption, wise through his wisdom - will soon place him in his true rank, above all heaps of metal and spadefuls of earth, and honour him as the only true noble, the only man who has no need of heraldic lies and fictitious grandfathers. These are great truths that the children of men of genius too should bear in mind. They should feel that they cannot inherit genius, but they may possess it in some new shape, an equal gift of Heaven. This will keep alive in them the spirit of honoru'able action; and they may come to live, not in the moonshine of their ancestral lights, but in a genuine warm sunshine of their own. The honour of a distinguished parent is not our honour but our foil, if we do not seek to establish an alliance with it by our own exertion, and above all by goodness.
