Book Description
This anthology is remarkable not only for the selections themselves, among which the Schelling and the Heidegger essays were translated especially for this volume, but also for the editors' general introduction and the introductory essays for each selection, which make this volume an invaluable aid to the study of the powerful, recurrent ideas concerning art, beauty, critical method, and the nature of representation. Because this collection makes clear the ways in which the philosophy of art relates to and is part of general philosophical positions, it will be an essential sourcebook to students of philosophy, art history, and literary criticism.

Book Description
There has long been a need for a work on the philosophy of beauty treating fundamental problems against the background of the history of aesthetics--ancient and medieval as well as modern and contemporary. This book answers that need with the comprehensive presentations of an objectivist philosophy of beauty to balance the currently popular aesthetic subjectivism. It includes a synopsis of views and theories expressed on the various questions about beauty by philosophers down through the ages. Kovach's acquaintance with relevant literature from the ancient Greeks to twentieth-century authors is staggering. He draws on the observations of thinkers from ancient times--Plato, Aristotle. Philo of Alexandria, Cicero, Plotinus, Augustine, Dionysius the Areopagite, and others; from medieval times--Alexander of Hales, John of la Rochelle, Thomas of York, Bonaventure, Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Dionysius the Carthusian, and others; from modern times--Descartes, J. Addison, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Tolstoi, Santayana, Croce, Maritain, Sartre, H. Read, Thomas Munro, and others. With delicate precision Kovach systematically discusses the philosophy of beauty and the problems it raises. Whether or not one agrees with Kovach's objectivist position, no one in the field can afford to be without this book.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Beautiful: Being Outlines of the History of Æsthetics This book originated in a course of lectures delivered to the Philosophical Institution of Edinburgh in 1889, and afterwards to a University Extension audience in London, and at Cheltenham. In these lectures a discussion of the Philosophy of Beauty, and an attempt at constructive theory, preceded an outline of the History of Opinion, and a critical analysis of the chief theories of Æsthetic. The former section of the course was longer than the latter, and it was my original intention to expand both of them, in somewhat equal proportions, into a connected Treatise. In making a more minute study of the literature of the subject, however, the works of many minor writers had to be examined, as well as those which have a claim to rank as major. Although they have not added anything absolutely new to the philosophy of Æsthetics, they have usually restated the problem, common to them all, in such a way as to entitle them to mention - and to honourable mention - in any History, that lays claim to be even approximately complete. In such a matter, finality is of course impossible; but fulness, as well as accuracy, is essential in every record of opinion. Book Description
Among the ancients the fundamental theory of the beautiful was connected with the notions of rhythm, symmetry, harmony of parts; in short, with the general formula of unity in variety. Among the moderns we find that more emphasis is laid on the idea of significance, expressiveness, the utterance of all that life contains; in general, that is to say, on the conception of the characteristic. -from "Definition of Beauty" T.H. Green called him "the most gifted man of his generation." Certainly he was one of the most popular and most influential British idealists of the early 20th century, and an intellectual cousin of Ludwig Wittgenstein and Bertrand Russell. In this definitive work, first published in 1892, Bernard Bosanquet explores the realm of aesthetics-the philosophy of art-from a romantic, almost mystical perspective, discussing how the appreciation of art exposes the spirituality of humanity, and why it is a vital component to any metaphysical understanding of the universe. From the earliest Greek poetry and Latin comedy to very modern ideas about "ugly beauty" and the impact of science on art, Bosanquet will change the way you look at art. British scholar and philosopher BERNARD BOSANQUET (1848-1923) also wrote, among his many works, Logic, or the Morphology of Knowledge (1888), The Civilization of Christendom and Other Studies (1893), and Social and International Ideals: Being Studies in Patriotism (1917).
