Who in 1892 founded the People's Singing Classes in New York. From a generous impulse on his part to offer on a large scale, and to those who could not otherwise afford it, an opportunity for musical culture similar to that enjoyed by his own pupils. The need which later made the present New York and Boston People's Choral Unions possible had found expres sion abroad in singing circles, musical clubs, people's concert societies, etc., but it remained for Dr. Damrosch to build up from similar material the first successful organization in America.
