Book Description
The poet and sage here appears as a writer for children in a number of veins - comic, whimsical, tender, serious. Among the variety of verses to be found here are delicate pieces originally written for an innovative Bengali textbook; delightful nonsense poetry and presentations of a child'sdesires and fantasies; and narrative and didactic poems as simple as they are sober and unpatronizing. These verses appear alongside a range of other writing: short plays and sketches; short stories; chatty tales where everyday life blends with fantasy and witty philosophizing. The collection isrounded off with a selection from Rabindranath's accounts of his own childhood. Most of theses pieces have never been translated before. Many of them would have been considered untranslatable. The book also contains a wealth of illustrations by Rabindranath himself, his circle and the members of theSantiniketan community. The book offers readers a rich insight into one of the most attractive yet least explored aspects of Rabindranath's life and imagination. More obviously, it constitutes a treasury of funny, colourful, thoughtful writing touched by the mind of an all-time genius.

Book Description
From presenting, in Elwin's own words, the account of his going to work among the tribal peoples of central India, to affording glimpses of his seminal work on the unique institution of the ghotul among the Murias of Bastar, or relating Elwin's attempts at understanding the high incidence of murder and suicide among the Bison-horn Marias of Bastar, The Oxford India Elwin looks beyond the general and the oft-repeated to include within its covers the many fascinating discoveries that Verrier Elwin made while working among the different tribal communities in India. While the Introduction to Folk Songs of the Maikal Hills discusses the principles of translating folk poetry, the importance of the elements of nature, magic, the supernatural, and song and dance in tribal life is highlighted through selections from The Myths of Middle India. Whether providing glimpses of Elwin's travels in the remote Northeast, or discussing the effects of 'civilization' on tribal art, or describing the Naga people and their customs, or presenting the myths of the NEFA region, the effort is to bring the man, his thoughts and actions, the contributions he made towards upholding and preserving the cultural diversity of the Subcontinent, closer to readers through a single volume which will be both accessible and affordable. The book will be a valuable addition to the Oxford India Collection which includes the writings of Ghalib, Premchand, Ramanujan, Nehru, and Gandhi. Armed with a useful and perceptive Introduction by G.N. Devy, this edition will appeal to all those who know and adore Elwin, as also students and researchers of anthropology, cultural studies, and Indian history.

Book Description
The Crescent Moon illustrated Rabindranath Tagore - In The Crescent Moon, Rabindranath Tagore brings alive the world of a child--in some poems he describes the simple joys of children at play, while in others, he feels the bonds of affection between mother and child, and in yet others, he expresses wonder at the earthly beauty all around us. Also included here are some of his most thought-provoking stories with themes that are relevant for children. In 'The Kabuliwalla' little Minnie becomes friendly with a burly Afghan man, but will she remember him when he returns after many years? 'The Parrot's Tale' is an allegory about the perils of the modern system of education, and 'The Kingdom of Cards', set in a fantasy land of cards, is a powerful statement against the stifling of freedom of any kind.

Book Description
Poet, novelist, painter, musician and Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore was one of modern India's greatest literary figures. This collection brings together some of his best works—poems, short stories and plays in one volume. Be it the wit, magic and lyricism of his poetry or the vividly etched social milieu of his stories, or the sheer power and vibrancy of his plays, Tagore's versatility and unceasing creativity come alive in these writings. The title play 'The Land of Cards' is a satire against the bondage of orthodox rules, while in 'The Post Office', a child suffocated by his confined existence dreams of freedom in the world outside. From a son's cherished desire to protect his mother in the poem 'Hero' to a fruit-seller longing for his daughter faraway in the story 'Kabuliwala', Tagore's works convey his humanism and his deep understanding of human relationships.

Book Description
This book foregrounds the subjectivity of ‘acting women’ amidst violent debates on femininity and education, livelihood and labour, sexuality and marriage. It looks at the emergence of the stage actress as an artist and an ideological construct at critical phases of performance practice in British India. The focus here is on Calcutta, considered the ‘second city of the Empire’ and a nodal point in global trade circuits. Each chapter offers new ways of conceptualising the actress as a professional, a colonial subject, simultaneously the other and the model of the ‘new woman’. An underlying motif is the playing out of the idea of spiritual salvation, redemption and modernity. Analysing the dynamics behind stagecraft and spectacle, the study highlights the politics of demarcation and exclusion of social roles. It presents rich archival work from diverse sources, many translated for the first time. This book makes a distinctive contribution in intertwining performance studies with literary history and art practices within a cross-cultural framework. Interdisciplinary and innovative, it will appeal to scholars and researchers in South Asian theatre and performance studies, history and gender studies.
