Book Description
Excerpt from The Outline of Government in the United States The influence of women in politics 18 going to be felt only in pro portion to their intelligent conception of the realities of government and politics. It 13 better that slow progress be made with a constantly increasing diffusion of knowledge than that a temporary success be gained in the shape of the immediate adoption of ready-made reform. An intelligent electorate can, if it will, secure satisfactory results from imperfect institutions; an unintelligent electorate will be victimized by the unscrupulous under the most perfect forms of government. This book is dedicated to no specific type of reform; it hafs carefully avoided propaganda of all sorts; its sole purpose is to m orm. Book Description
Excerpt from The Government of the United States The main purpose of this book is to show what the Government of the United States is, by giving a sketch of its organization and the general methods of its working. It deals not only with the central, or Federal government, but also with the State, Territorial, and local governments; and all of these taken together make up the Government of the United States. Students who undertake the study of this Government should keep in mind the fact that each of the governments, local, State, and Federal, exercises some part of the political power of the nation. This is the territorial distribution of power. He should also keep in mind the fact that in the town or city government, as well as in the State or Federal government, the power which each holds is divided among the legislative, the executive, and the judicial departments. This is a distribution according to the kind of power to be exercised. Thus, in order to understand how this nation is governed, one must give attention to both of these forms of distribution. The topics here treated, concerning the organization and powers of the Government, constitute a general subject by themselves. If properly comprehended, they show us what the Government is. Book Description
Excerpt from The Government of the United States Many teachers entertain a conviction that most text-books for use in grammar and high-school grades, especially in the latter, require too much time for a thorough mastery of their contents. The number of subjects taught in schools Of all kinds and grades has greatly multiplied in recent years; but the school day is no longer than it was - in fact, it is shorter; nor has the school year been lengthened much, least of all in towns and cities. Consequently there is much complaint concerning overloaded courses Of study and crowded annual, weekly, and daily programs. There are those among educators, and others interested in educational improvement, who advocate a reduction in the number of subjects taught and a more intensive study Of the branches retained. It is not within the province Of this Preface to predict how the evil complained of will be remedied; but experience in the schoolroom has led many teachers to believe that less voluminous text-books would be at least a partial remedy. If the demands of the age require an increasingly greater number of subjects to be taught, it follows that less time must be given to each subject. But unless the text-books arc proportionately reduced in their scope, the attempt to get over them will result in skimming and Skipping, and consequently in an imperfect and evanescent knowledge of the contents. Book Description
Excerpt from A General Outline of Civil Government: In the United States, the States, Counties, Townships, Cities, and Towns There are many good text-books on the subject which require from two to three terms to complete; but the press of other important studies is so great that it is better to have a treatise which may be completed in a single term with perhaps but two recitations a week. In making a book of this kind, the purpose has been to secure the greatest brevity with the least loss of the qualities of a good text-book. Much of the comment on different institutions is left to the teacher, who will know best how to economize time as the case of his class requires. The frequent mention of books for a further study of the subject will be of help to teachers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Government of the United States: National, State, and Local The plan, scope, content, and temper of this book are in large measure the outgrowth of my experience as a teacher. My students, by the drift of their questions and discussions, have moulded my ideas of what a text-book ought to contain. This book is theirs as much as it is mine. That fact may help to explain why some features of American government are dilated upon at considerable length, while others are left as self-evident propositions to the perception of the reader. It explains, moreover, why the same problem is occasionally discussed from different angles, even though this has in volved some degree Of repetition. And if the general tone of the book betrays an optimist, my sufficient answer is that no man can be for many years associated with the American undergraduate and remain anything else. He is capable of receiving and imparting useful knowledge. He yearns to know and to make known. This yearning, being a part Of his nature, must be satisfied in order to his highest enjoyment. But society alone can satisfy that longing. Therefore society is a necessity for the intel lectual well-being otman. II. - But man needs protection against robbers, murderers, and the evil-inclined; also assistance in procuring the necessities of life. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Government of the United States He is aware that, notwithstanding the assistance rendered by friends in America, he must have fallen into not a few errors, and Without asking to be excused for these, he desires to plead in extenuation that the book has been written under the constant pressure of public duties as well as of other private work, and that the difficulty of obtaining in Europe correct information regarding the constitutions and laws of American States and the rules of party organizations is very great. Book Description
Excerpt from Constitutional Government in the United States MY object in the following lectures-is to examine the government of the United States as a constitutional system as Simply and directly as possible, with an eye to practice, not to theory. And yet at the very outset it is necessary to pause upon a theory. The government of the United States cannot be intelligently discussed as a constitutional system until we clearly determine what we mean by a constitutional government; and the answer to that question is in effect a theory of politics.
