Book Description
Excerpt from Ontario High School Chemistry: Pupils d104-Book The value Of an experiment is only slightly in the doing Of it, mainly its worth lies in the discussion Of the observations. The questions that accompany the directions for the experiments in the book are intended to be only suggestive, for such questions must Of necessity be general in their character. The teacher should, there fore, take up the consideration of the problem from the point of View Of the pupils' requirements and experiences as shown in what they have derived from the work done. Book Description
Excerpt from Ontario High School Laboratory Manual in Chemistry As this Manual is intended for use in secondary schools of all grades, it has been thought best to leave to indi vidual teachers the selection of the experiments which the class shall be required to do and those which the teacher himself will use for demonstration purposes. The equip ment of the schools, the experience of the teachers, and the exigencies of the time-table, are so variable that it seems unwise to prescribe a division which, suitable in some cases, would be quite unsatisfactory in others. Most of the experiments should always be done by the pupils, some may be done by either pupils or teacher, and a few probably would, for various reasons, be better per formed by the teacher. These last have been retained in the Text-book, the others are in the Manual. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Ontario High School Chemistry There are certain essential features that every elementary text-book in Chemistry should exhibit. (1) The chief function of science, as a part of school education, is not to impart information, but to offer a training in the scientific method by which the mind works up the concrete facts of nature into generalizations. Hence a text-book should show how investigations are conducted; and, for this purpose, the method by which the process of combustion and the composition of air and of water were discovered are presented with some detail. (2) An elementary text-book should also state some of the generalizations or laws of chemistry, as it is a knowledge of these that indicates clearly that chemistry is a science. Moreover, it is essential, in order that these laws should be properly understood, that a knowledge of important substances, their methods of preparation, and their properties should be stated, as it is only by means of such knowledge that the generalizations can be approached. (3) Side by side with the advance in the knowledge of the facts of chemistry has moved the development of chemical theories, and no adequate knowledge of the methods of chemistry could be presented without a statement of those theories that have had, and still possess, such potent influence on the advancement of the science. Book Description
Excerpt from Ontario High School Chemistry: Pupils Text-Book This book is published in two parts, in accordance with what is believed to be good pedagogical practice, viz.: To enable pupils to gain a knowledge of chemistry by doing chemistry, not simply by "getting it up." For this purpose it is intended that both parts of the book shall be in the hands of the scholars; and that when a topic is taken up the practical exercises relating to it shall be worked, as directed in the Manual, and the observations necessary for the lesson shall be recorded for reference. After the notes relating to the subject have been satisfactorily completed, it is expected that the teacher shall discuss the results with the class in a systematic way, and shall guide the pupils to proper conclusions in accordance with chemical laws and principles. In this connection the descriptive part of the Text-book will come into service. Manifestly the pupils note-book will be an important part of his material outfit, for it will form the connecting link between the exercises of the Manual and the description of the Text. The Chemistry of the Middle School should serve a double purpose for the pupil who properly studies it. One of these aims at the development of that mental attitude called the scientific mind which investigates, weighs evidence, and forms judgments based on reason. The other consists in imparting to the student such a knowledge of the facts, the principles and the methods of the science that he will be able either to acquire further information of the same kind by independent reading, or to take up a more advanced course of chemical study. Without doubt, the educational function is the more important one; and, while the two objects have some elements in common, there is yet divergence enough between them to cause hesitancy, at times, as to which of two courses is the preferable one to follow. Under such circumstances there must be some compromise between what is best and what is possible, especially when the work has to be curtailed to meet the requirements of a time limit. It has been thought best to treat the subject in accordance with modern theory, and to introduce from the first the ideas and the terminology needed for that purpose, in order that the student may not have to discard, at a latter period, what he learns regarding chemistry in the High School. For these reasons the method of treatment and the choice of material will vary somewhat from those hitherto adopted. The present equipment of the schools, the relations of science to daily life, and the character and aims of secondary education in the province have all been considered in determining what shall be taken up in the course, and how it shall be dealt with. Book Description
Excerpt from The School Chemistry: A New Text-Book for High Schools and Academies The chief significance of the foregoing is that, as far as possible, each pupil is to perform the experiments for himself, make his own observations, and draw his own conclusions. This is important, whether some of the experiments have been performed by the instructor before the class or not. In every case there must be care that the conclusions arrived at are founded upon actual facts. See that each pupil has a small note-book, and that he always has it at hand when he is making his experiments. See that the details of all experiments made by him are recorded by him in this book at the time of the experiment, not subsequently. In addition to the description of the Operation, the record should contain an account of all observed phenomena, and the conclusions drawn from them. The ability to observe accurately and completely, and the ability to draw proper conclusions from observed facts, are the two greatest benefits to be derived from the study of general chemistry. Make frequent and careful examinations of the pupil's notes, seeking to lead him to accurate observation, to intelligent discrimination between essential and merely incidental conditions and results of an experiment, to correctness of conclusions, and to precision and concise ness of statement. Do not let your pupils get the idea that they, chemists; do not think that you ought to make chemists' of them. After this course has been completed, a course in some good school of applied science will be needed for the pupil who desires to become a chemist.' The author would be glad to receive suggestions from teachers using this book, or to answer any inquiries they may make. He may be addressed at Cleveland, Ohio. He gratefully acknowledges the aid given him by many. Especial mention is due to Professor Albert W. Smith of the Case School of Applied Science; his work shows on almost every page. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Chemistry for High Schools The successful study of chemistry necessarily presupposes some knowledge of physics; but, in an elementary work like this, the quantity is very small. Acquaintance with the metric system is taken for granted, and the centigrade thermometer-scale is used throughout the book.
