Book Description
The O.C., A Critical Understanding, by Lori Bindig and Andrea M. Bergstrom, is a feminist cultural studies analysis of FOX's hit teen television drama The O.C. (2003-2007). Episodes of The O.C. are analyzed as a set of media texts that blur the boundaries between hegemonic and counter-hegemonic content. This analysis utilizes ancillary media such as director commentary in conjunction with content in order to understand how ideological content, in regards to gender, race, class, sexuality, and consumerism, is presented throughout the show. The O.C. is also examined in terms of audience analysis, auteur theory, aesthetics, and reality television spin-offs. Bindig and Bergstrom place The O.C. in a larger social context and explore the potential ramifications of popular media texts, as well as the series' cultural legacy which continues to resonate in media and culture.

Book Description
This book presents a comprehensive and innovative understanding of the role of shallow coastal ecosystems in carbon cycling, particularly marine carbon sequestration. Incorporating a series of forward-looking chapters, the book combines thorough reviews of the global literature and regional assessments—mainly around the Indo-Pacific region and Japan—with global perspectives to provide a thorough assessment of carbon cycling in shallow coastal systems. It advocates the expansion of blue-carbon ecosystems (mangroves, seagrass meadows, and salt marshes) into macroalgal beds, tidal flats, coral reefs, and urbanized shallow waters, demonstrating the potential of these ecosystems as new carbon sinks. Moreover, it discusses not only topics that are currently the focus of blue-carbon studies, i.e., sedimentary carbon stock and accumulation rate, but also CO2 gas exchange between the atmosphere and shallow coastal ecosystems, carbon storage in the water column as refractory organic carbon, and off-site carbon storage. Including highly original contributions, this comprehensive work inspires research beyond the specific regions covered by the chapters. The suite of new concepts and approaches is refreshing and demonstrates that blue-carbon research is indeed a vibrant new field of research, providing deep insights into neglected aspects of carbon cycling in the marine environment. At the same time the book provides guidance for policy makers to deliver benefits to society, for example the inclusion of blue carbon as a carbon offset scheme or the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in the Paris Agreement, and also for building resilience in coastal socio-ecosystems through better management. This book is intended for all those interested in the science and management of coastal ecosystems.

Book Description
Kevin M. Passino When confronted with a control problem for complicated physical process, a control engineer usually follows a predetermined design procedure. This procedure often begins with the engineer seeking to understand the process and the primary control objectives. A simple example ofa control problem is an automobile "cruise control" that provides the automobile with the capability of regulating its own speed at a driver-specified set-point (e. g. , 55 mph). One solution to the automotive cruise control problem involves adding an electronic controller that can sense the speed of the vehicle via the speedometer and actuate the throttle position so as to regulate the vehicle speed at the driver-specified value. Such speed regulation must be accurate even if there are road grade changes, head-winds, or variations in the number of passengers in the automobile. After gaining an intuitive understanding of the plant's dynamics and establishing the design objectives, the control engineer typically solves the cruise control problem by using an established design procedure. In particular, this control engineering design methodology involves: 1. Modeling/understanding the plant, 2. Construction of a controller to meet specifications (such as stability, rise-time, overshoot, and steady state error), 3. Analysis to make sure that the system will meet the performance objectives (e. g. , we might use mathematical, simulation-based, or experimental analysis), and 4. Iterating on the design until it is possible to "commission" the control system.
