The Objects of Thought
Author: Tim Crane
Publisher:
ISBN: 0199682747
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 195
Book Description
Tim Crane addresses the ancient question of how it is possible to think about what does not exist. He argues that the representation of the non-existent is a pervasive feature of our thought about the world, and that to understand thought's representational power ('intentionality') we need to understand the representation of the non-existent.

A Return to the Object
Author: Susanne Küchler
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000185524
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 269
Book Description
This book draws on the work of anthropologist Alfred Gell to reinstate the importance of the object in art and society. Rather than presenting art as a passive recipient of the artist's intention and the audience's critique, the authors consider it in the social environment of its production and reception. A Return to the Object introduces the historical and theoretical framework out of which an anthropology of art has emerged, and examines the conditions under which it has renewed interest. It also explores what art 'does' as a social and cultural phenomenon, and how it can impact alternative ways of organising and managing knowledge. Making use of ethnography, museological practice, the intellectual history of the arts and sciences, material culture studies and intangible heritage, the authors present a case for the re-orientation of current conversations surrounding the anthropology of art and social theory. This text will be of key interest to students and scholars in the social and historical sciences, arts and humanities, and cognitive sciences.

Fundamentals of Story Logic
Author: Therese Budniakiewicz
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9781556193392
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 260
Book Description
This book may be viewed not only as n post-Proppian, post-Greimassian reconstruction and theoretical advance but also as a neo-Proppian, neo-Greimassian remodelling of story logic leading to an integrated descriptive model which focuses, by design, on narrative semiotics as a branch of descriptive poetics. The investigation and the revision of the actantial model and the narrative schema are made concrete through multiple small narratives from literary fiction, specifically Nathanael West's Miss Lonelyhearts, a parable of Pascal, and a historical chronicle. The modifications which Therese Budniakiewicz proposes are turned, as it were, backward towards a theoretical foundation that is both re-found and re-founded, and what emerges is a methodology of textual analysis the scope of which extends to include hermeneutics and interpretation. At the same time, through the analysis the author makes of the 'contractual and communication events' and the central position she gives to the Sender and Receiver, the book is led to place emphasis on the social and interactional nature of discourse and, thereby, integrating the basics of narrative within the framework of law and society and justice. By putting the theory in perspective while carefully analyzing its premises and by consolidating a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary concepts crucial to narrative, Fundamentals of Story Logic will be welcomed by all students of fiction, narratology, and the classical Greimas.

Readings in Object-Oriented Database Systems
Author: Stanley B. Zdonik
Publisher: Morgan Kaufmann
ISBN: 9781558600003
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 646
Book Description
This comprehensive collection is a survey of research in object-oriented databases, offering a substantive overview of the field, section introductions, and over 40 research papers presented in their original scope and detail. The balanced selection of articles presents a confluence of ideas from both the language and database research communities that have contributed to the object-oriented paradigm. The editors develop a general definition and model for object-oriented databases and relate significant research efforts to this framework. Further, the collection explores the fundamental notions behind object-oriented databases, semantic data models, implementation of object-oriented systems, transaction processing, interfaces, and related approaches. Research and theory are balanced by applications to CAD systems, programming environments, and office information systems.
