Book Description
For generations, the Ojibwe bands of northern Wisconsin have spearfished spawning walleyed pike in the springtime. The bands reserved hunting, fishing, and gathering rights on the lands that would become the northern third of Wisconsin in treaties signed withøthe federal government in 1837, 1842, and 1854. Those rights, however, would be ignored by the state of Wisconsin for more than a century. When a federal appeals court in 1983 upheld the bands' off-reservation rights, a deep and far-reaching conflict erupted between the Ojibwe bands and some of their non-Native neighbors. Starting in the mid-1980s, protesters and supporters flocked to the boat landings of lakes being spearfished; Ojibwe spearfisher-men were threatened, stoned, and shot at. Peace and protest rallies, marches, and ceremonies galvanized and rocked the local communities and reservations, and individuals and organizations from across the country poured into northern Wisconsin to take sides in the spearfishing dispute. From the front lines on lakes to tense, behind-the-scenes maneuvering on and off reservations, The Walleye War tells the riveting story of the spearfishing conflict, drawing on the experiences and perspectives of the members of the Lac du Flambeau reservation and an anthropologist who accompanied them on spearfishing expeditions. We learn of the historical roots and cultural significance of spearfishing and off-reservation treaty rights and we see why many modern Ojibwes and non-Natives view them in profoundly different ways. We also come to understand why the Flambeau tribal council and some tribal members disagreed with the spearfishermen and pursued a policy of negotiation with the state to lease the off-reservation treaty rights for fifty million dollars. Fought with rocks and metaphors, The Walleye War is the story of a Native people's struggle for dignity, identity, and self-preservation in the modern world.

Book Description
From a grueling 37-hour fight with a Pacific salmon to the maimed fisherman whose severed thumb turned up in the belly of a Mackinaw trout. From extraordinary marlin quests to hair-raising tales of "fish catches man," here are fishing's 80 most unpredictable and spectacular tales. To get them, Shaun Morey-a fanatical fisherman and inveterate story collector-traveled from Alaska to Australia, Mexico, and the Caribbean to interview anglers, boat captains, guides and witnesses; to dig up photographs, and to confirm each tale. You'll read about Captain Jimmy Lewis who, in a moment of sheer bravado (or insanity), speared by hand-and landed-a 1,600-pound hammerhead shark. Or Bob Smith, fulfilling his twenty-year quest to catch all forty species of North America's wild trout on the bitter cold morning after his eighty-first birthday. Or the 800-pound blue marlin that made a final lunge-ripping up the deck and dragging a chair, with Paul Clause strapped in it, to the bottom of the ocean. (Paul survived; so did the marlin.) Truth is stranger than fiction.

Book Description
Every year on the Fourth of July, Jeeters wife Lou struts in the town parade wearing suspenders made of jumper cables with a tow chain around her waist. Those in the knowwhich means everyone in townchuckle at Lous silent commentary on her husbands skill as an automotive mechanic. But Jeeter has a different perspective: Thats my wife right there, he tells a stranger. She knows cars. Author Bill Schubart brings to life the friends and characters of his native Lamoille County, where in the late 1950s and early 1960s, life was lived close to the earth and often against the grain. Schubarts collection of twenty-two stories captures Vermont in its transition from an enclave of hill farms and small towns where everyone knew your grandfather to a place where vehicles bearing license plates from away mix with hippie vans filled with born-again Vermonters getting back to the land]until snowfall. Its a time and place where the Jeeters of The Lamoille Stories rub elbows with the ladies of the Uplift Club, all to the fiddle accompaniment of Qubcois music played by people whose conversations often weave French and English together in a single sentence. Schubarts full-hearted and compassionate evocation of this Vermont is by turns poignant, funny and savory. The stories give readers a good excuse to stay up too late to discover how Wyvis will circumvent the new Vermont prohibition on having more than three junk cars in your yard or how Charlie is going to get Edgar to pay him for his new chimney. Schubarts thoroughly enjoyable short story collection is as finely etched as the frost crystals on your winter window. Amusez-vous bien! Bill Schubarts Vermont stories of a mostly-forgotten time and place arefresh, authentic, funny in places and sad in others. He knows his corner of the Green Mountains inside out and writes with honesty and grace about its people. Howard Frank Mosher, author of Disappearances, Mary Blythe, and On Kingdom Mountain

Book Description
"The most innovative fly tier I have ever known." --Lefty Kreh on Bob Popovics "Bob Popovics has brought more creative ideas to the table in the last two decades than any other tier out there." --Dan Blanton This is the first and only book available on the tier whose techniques with epoxy and silicone revolutionized saltwater fly tying. The family of flies Bob Popovics developed over the last three decades (dubbed "Pop Fleyes," a spelling that incorporates part of his last name with the fact that eyes are a prominent feature in their design) have proven devastatingly effective for stripers, bluefish, false albacore, and many more species. This book goes beyond the basic recipe format to provide the thinking behind Popovics's pattern development, a guide to key tying techniques, and detailed notes on how to fish Pop Fleyes most effectively.

Married at nineteen, she was a war widow at twenty. Now 85 years old, Meara Sullivan is determined to reconnect with her husband who died during World War II on D-Day. They knew each other as husband and wife for only five days when Private 1st Class Paul Hughes shipped off for Europe, never to return. CLOSURE, the anchor story of this 7-story anthology, recounts Meara’s unlikely trail of discovery. Told in a series of flashbacks, CLOSURE captures life on the home front for Meara and Paul in 1940s Boston and offers a gripping account of the young soldier’s part in the greatest amphibious invasion in military history. Dan Celeste is both narrator and participant in each of the anthology’s seven tales. His personal story interlaces historical events, intriguing characters, and coming-of-age lessons. CLOSURE and Other Stories spans seven decades, beginning in 1943 and ending in 2011 when Meara completes her quest for renewal.
