Book Description
Excerpt from The Norfolk Village Green This brochure, published for private circulation only, will attain its object if it inspires the sacred duty of preserving the beautiful Village Green of Norfolk, and of handing it down in all its glory of historical tradition, local association and natural beauty, to future generations. As all the village greens of New England have a certain common significance, it opens with a description of them in general, and passes on to describe in detail the Norfolk Green, and to narrate the principal events that have occurred upon it. The inspiration to write a brief historical sketch of my mothers birthplace was derived from the words of Rev. Dr. Joseph Eldridge in one of his Thanksgiving sermons, in which he said: "It is a duty of filial piety, as well as gratitude to the supreme disposer of events, to gather up, and preserve, and transmit all the memorials we can, of the labors, trials and achievements of those who have preceded us on the spot where we dwell." A chronological table giving a brief history of the town from its incorporation to the present time is added. The Norfolk Mystery
Author: Ian Sansom
Publisher: Harper Collins
ISBN: 0062320807
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 212
Book Description
Love Miss Marple? Adore Holmes and Watson? Professor Morley's guide to Norfolk is a story of bygone England: quaint villages, eccentric locals—and murder … It is 1937, and disillusioned Spanish Civil War veteran Stephen Sefton is broke. So when he sees a mysterious advertisement for a job where "intelligence is essential," he eagerly applies. Thus begins Sefton's association with Professor Swanton Morley, an omnivorous intellect. Morley's latest project is a history of traditional England, with a guide to every county. They start in Norfolk, but when the vicar of Blakeney is found hanging from his church's bell rope, Morley and Sefton find themselves drawn into a rather more fiendish plot. Did the reverend really take his own life, or is there something darker afoot? A must-read for fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, and Charles Todd, this novel includes plenty of murder, mystery, and mayhem to confound.
