Book Description
Excerpt from The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, 1872, Vol. 3: Devoted to the Interests of American Genealogy and Biography We have thus traced the various genealogic currents which converged and were united in our friend's veins, not merely because they were honorable, or because of their intrinsic interest as a part of the history of our city and its neighborhood; but because we, as genealogists, firmly believe that, in order to know a man thoroughly, to read his character intelligently, to judge him with that even measure of justice with which we should wish ourselves to be judged, while we live, and after we are dead. It is indispensable that we should know something of his ancestral beginnings. For it is in these that we detect and trace the operation of that rare and subtile essence - distilled in the alembic of Time, from diverse sources - which we vaguely and\some what rudely call blood, and which imparts to the individual life the peculiar idiosyncracies which, in some measure, explain its career, and account for its foibles and its virtues. For example, I can truly say that since I have traced Mr. Gautier's ancestry, from the papers which he left, I have obtained a truer estimate of his character than I should probably have acquired through a much longer acquaintance with him, had his life been Spared. Book Description
Excerpt from The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, 1903, Vol. 34: Devoted to the Interests of American Genealogy and Biography When Egbert was but seven years of age Judge Viele died suddenly of apoplexy while walking in his garden, and the family moved to Lansingburg. This, for reasons of economy in part, and in part to be nearer Schaghticoke where the barns were over dowin Here every winter with the first snow came sleighs heape high with fire wood, or loaded deep with apples, pumpkins and potatoes, and the road to the homestead, distant a Sabbath Day's journey, soon grew familiar to the sturdy boy. Egbert passed all of his vacations at the old brick mansion or roaming over its thousand acres of field and forest, and in spite of a New England aunt who held the small red school-house to have been built to keep little fingers out of mischief, he always looked back to the days at Schaghticoke as among the happiest of his life. Sometimes the journey there was made behind his uncle's horses but more often on foot, with an occasional 'lift from some good natured teamster, and when the days were short a lodging over night at the Checkered Shed Tavern, where there were interest ing stories to be overheard of busy far oe places. These travel lers' tales awakened ia the listener a resolution to be one day part of that strange outer world of action, and when he was scarcely sixteen he made his first appearance in public life. He had always been a leader among his playmates, and when in 1841 the temperance agitation grew into a national movement he was elected President of the State Youth's Temperance Society, and established a newspaper in the interest of the cause. This jour nal, called the 'enterprise', had for its motto The tree which does not blossom in the Spring will not bear fruit in Autumn.
