Book Description
Climate change has been a perplexing problem for years. In Cold Sun, author John L. Casey, a former White House national space policy advisor, NASA headquarters consultant, and space shuttle engineer tells the truth about ominous changes taking place in the climate and the Sun. Casey's research into the Sun's activity, which began four years ago, resulted in discovery of a solar cycle that is now reversing from its global warming phase to that of dangerous global cooling for the next thirty years or more. This new cold climate will dramatically impact the world's citizens. In Cold Sun, he provides evidence of the following: / The end of global warming / The beginning of a solar hibernation, a historic reduction in the energy output of the Sun / A long-term drop in the Earth's temperatures / The start of the next climate change to decades of dangerously cold weather / The high probability of record earthquakes and volcanic eruptions A sobering look at the Earth's future, Cold Sun predicts worldwide, crop-destroying cold; food shortages and riots in the United States and abroad; signifi cant global loss of life; and social, political, and economic upheaval.

Book Description
Through a blend of social and media history, the author explores America's transition from a production-oriented society to a culture of consumption. Because of Dana's strong aversion to the consumerism that accompanied industrial capitalism, the Sun became both the conscience and the advocate for New York's working class. In the words of Joseph Pulitzer, Dana transformed the Sun into "the most piquant, entertaining, and without exception, the best newspaper in the world."

Book Description
Strategic initiative implementation has evolved in recent years as a new and progressive form of strategy making. In this regard, strategic initiative implementation constitutes one of the central topics of strategic management regarding how firms can renew their most valuable sources of competitive advantage: the firm's idiosyncratic resources and knowledge base. Strategic management concepts and practical guidelines are still lacking on how strategic initiative implementation affects a company's idiosyncratic resources and knowledge base and what kinds of challenging effects may evolve during the strategic initiative implementation. Therefore, the aim of this book is to enhance our understanding of how strategic initiative implementation affects a firm's most valuable sources of competitive advantage and how thinking in strategic initiatives changes the thinking of traditional strategic Management disciplines. The book proposes a new way of strategy making concepts through proposing a new theory that depicts the dysfunctional effects of strategic initiative implementation. New thoughts are proposed to enhance a firm's existing core capabilities in the context of strategic initiative implementation and the interactions between ongoing initiatives. Furthermore, the book highlights the role and value of strategic initiative related dynamic capabilities. New insights into the challenges and limitations of extending and recombining the emerging knowledge bases from ongoing initiatives depict the evolution of dysfunctional knowledge. This book is a valuable source for both, practitioner and scholars to enhance their daily work and thoughts.

Book Description
Sunshine plays an important role in all aspects of life but there has been little social analysis of the sun and its place in our world. Recently experts have warned us that the sun's rays are dangerous. Yet, the sun-tan can still be taken as a sign of health. How did we arrive at this ambivalent relationship to the sun and what does this say about our changing attitudes to the human body and environment? Rise and Shine takes as its starting point a view of sunlight as part of our material and social culture. How did the use of sunlight to treat TB and rickets in the early twentieth century alter our relationship to the sun? When was sun-tan lotion invented? By drawing on a range of archive and historical sources, Rise and Shine traces the network of social and medical forces that constitute our current, sometimes problematic, relationship with sun and sunlight.

Book Description
What role have experiments played, and should they play, in physics? How does one come to believe rationally in experimental results? The Neglect of Experiment attempts to provide answers to both of these questions. Professor Franklin's approach combines the detailed study of four episodes in the history of twentieth century physics with an examination of some of the philosophical issues involved. The episodes are the discovery of parity nonconservation ( or the violation of mirror symmetry) in the 1950s; the nondiscovery of parity nonconservation in the 1930s, when the results of experiments indicated, at least in retrospect, the symmetry violation, but the significance of those results was not realized; the discovery and acceptance of CP ( combined parity-charge conjugations, paricle-antiparticle) symmetry; and Millikan's oil-drop experiment. Franklin examines the various roles that experiment plays, including its role in deciding between competing theories, confirming theories, and calling fo new theories. The author argues that one can provide a philosophical justification for these roles. He contends that if experiment plays such important roles, then one must have good reason to believe in experimental results. He then deals with deveral problems concerning such reslults, including the epistemology of experiment, how one comes to believe rationally in experimental results, the question of the influence of theoretical presuppositions on results, and the problem of scientific fruad. This original and important contribution to the study of the philosophy of experimental science is an outgrowth of many years of research. Franklin brings to this work more than a decade of experience as an experimental high-energy physicist, along with his significant contributions to the history and philosophy of science.
