Excerpt from The Municipal Parks, Gardens, and Open Spaces of London: Their History and Associations HE meaning of the title and scope of this book I calls for some explanation, especially When it Will be found that no mention is made of such places as Hyde Park, Regent's Park, or St. James's Park, Which have a right to be considered the most important parks in London. In the first place, the history of these parks has been more than once written, and in the second place it must be pointed out that they are national rather than municipal 'lungs, ' because they are kept up at the expensie of the nation at large, and not by any one municipality. London's/municipal parks and open spaces are those which are maintained by the London County Council at the. Expense of the Metropolitan ratepayers. In addition to the national and municipal places of recreation, there are a number of disused burial-grounds and other small grounds maintained by the various local vestries, Whilst the number is completed by those under the care of Conservators, private bodies and individuals, the most important of Which are Wimbledon Common and Putney Heath, together making a magnificent open space, acres in extent. The Corporation of the City of London also possesses some acres of parks and open spaces which are available for the use of Londoners, but are maintained out of city cash' and the funds derivable from metage on grain. The largest of these is Epping Forest; but, like the majority of the City parks, this is outside the County of London. Governance and Public Space in the Australian City is a rich and evocative examination of the production and use of public spaces in Australian cities in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Using Brisbane as a case study, it demonstrates the way public spaces were constructed, contested, and controlled in attempts to create ‘ideal’ city spaces. This construction of space is considered not just in the literal and material sense but also as a product of aspirational and imaginative processes of city-building by municipal authorities and citizens. This book is as much about people as it is about cities – uncovering the manner in which perceived models of ideal urban citizenship were reflected in the production and ordering of city spaces. This book challenges common narratives that situate public spaces as universal or equalising aspects of the urban sphere.
