Book Description
The historical relations of public education to the institutions of religion have been variously significant. While governmental affairs and ecclesiastical affairs have been set apart from each other in this country, the teaching of sectarian doctrines is generally excluded from the schools of the several States, an understanding of the relations actually subsisting between the schools and the organized religion of other lands is greatly to be desired. It can help in many ways to a clearer insight into discussions which occasionally arise in this country and to a better appreciation of the import of changes which are proposed from time to time. This bulletin presents a careful study of the recent agitation in favor of a change in the teaching of religion in the public schools of the kingdom of Saxony, one of the States of the German Empire. Such a study is illuminating for the reason that it affords an opportunity for a vivid setting forth of a single concrete situation, which at the same time may be regarded as typical of the opposition of ideas in other European countries. An index is included. Individual sections contain footnotes. [Best copy available has been provided.].

Book Description
Excerpt from Religious Education and for the Healing of the Church It seems strange that Luther in neither of his treatises on the establishment of public schools speaks specifically of the religious education of the child. His catechisms were not written for the school, but for 'pastors and teachers, ' as the preface to the Small Catechism says, and for 'house-fathers, ' as the headings of the various parts say. Even Gerhard looks to the ministers and not to the schools for the religious training of the children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Social Emphasis in Religious Education In the reform that is now taking place in religious education certain things are funda mental, others accessory. The accessories were the first to attract popular attention. We were told that the hands of Sunday-school pupils, as well as their minds, require occupa tion. Teachers were urged to learn how to make a lesson plan, how to ask questions, how to tell stories. Great stress was laid upon the gradation of pupils and of lessons. All this advice is indispensable, and it is having excel lent results. But there is a prior question, namely, What sort of men and women do we want our pupils to become, and therefore what principles shall control the content of our teaching? Book Description
Excerpt from An Integrated Program of Religious Education People divide on the question whether religion can be taught and what is meant by teaching religion. Our own thought in all that follows construes religion as a way of life and Religious Education as the process by which we teach boys and girls, men and women, to live with and for each other and unto God. We do not hesitate, therefore, to record here unequivocally our conviction that religion can be taught. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
