Book Description
This book describes the design and internals of the MOSIX distributed operating system. MOSIX, an acronym for Multicomputer Operating System for UNIX, integrates a cluster of loosely integrated computers into a virtual single-machine UNIX environment. The main property of MOSIX is the high degree of integration among the processors, which may include personal workstations and shared memory and non-shared memory multiprocessors, connected by fast communication links. This integration includes network transparency, cooperation between the processors to provide services across machine boundaries, support of dynamic configuration, and system-initiated load balancing by process migration. Another property of MOSIX is the ability to scale up the system configuration to encompass a large number of computers. The development of MOSIX was begun in 1981. The book is intended primarily for readers who are interested in distributed and multiprocessor systems. The reader is assumed to have some knowledge in programming and operating systems, preferably UNIX. Readers without this background will still benefit from thetechniques and algorithms discussed.

Functional Programming, Concurrency, Simulation and Automated Reasoning
Author: Peter E. Lauer
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9783540568834
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 424
Book Description
This collection of papers arose from a series of lectures for workers in computer science and other disciplines. The lectures were intended to familiarize them with some of the most exciting advanced computer based systems for the conceptualization, design, implementation, simulation, and logical analysis of applications in these disciplines. The collection presents some strong motivational points for the use of theory based systems in the areas of functional programming, concurrency, simulation, and automated reasoning, highlighting some of their advantages and disadvantages relative to conventional systems. The papers are mostly the work of individuals who were among the originators of the systemspresented. The volume is intended as a contribution to narrowing the learning gap facing conventional computer users when they wish to use advanced theory based systems. The papers are meant for a wide audience and should not require great mathematical sophistication for their comprehension. The papers contain numerous references for those wishing to pursue a topic in greater depth.

Advances in Databases
Author: Michael F. Worboys
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9783540569213
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 292
Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the eleventh British National Conference on Databases, held at Keele University, England. A dominant themein the volume is the provision of the means to enhance the capabilities of databases to handle information that has a rich semantic structure. A major research question is how to achieve such a semantic scale-up without sacrificing performance. There are currently two main paradigms within which it is possible to propose answers to this question, deduction-oriented and object-oriented. Both paradigms are well represented in this collection, with the balance in the direction of the deductive approach, which is followed by both the invited papers, by Michael Freeston from the European Computer-Industry Research Centre in Munich and Carlo Zaniolo from the University of California at Los Angeles. In addition, the volume contains 13 full papers selected from a total of36 submissions.

Spatio-Temporal Image Processing
Author: Bernd Jähne
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9783540574187
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 228
Book Description
Image sequence processing is becoming a tremendous tool to analyze spatio-temporal data in all areas of natural science. It is the key to studythe dynamics of of complex scientific phenomena. Methods from computer science and the field of application are merged establishing new interdisciplinary research areas. This monograph emerged from scientific applications and thus is an example for such an interdisciplinaryapproach. It is addressed both to computer scientists and to researchers from other fields who are applying methods of computer vision. The results presented are mostly from environmental physics (oceanography) but they will be illuminating and helpful for researchers applying similar methods in other areas.

Program Development by Specification and Transformation
Author: Bernd Krieg-Brückner
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9783540567332
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 650
Book Description
This volume gives a coherent presentation of the outcome of the project PROSPECTRA (PROgram development by SPECification and TRAnsformation) that aims to provide a rigorous methodology for developing correct software and a comprehensive support system. The results are substantial: a theoretically well-founded methodology covering the whole development cycle, a very high-level specification and transformation language family allowing meta-program development and formalization of the development process itself, and a prototype development system supporting structure editing, incremental static-semantic checking, interactive context-sensitivetransformation and verification, development of transformation (meta-) programs, version management, and so on, with an initial libraryof specifications and a sizeable collection of implemented transformations. The intended audience for this documentation is the academic community working in this and related areas and those members of the industrial community interested in the use of formal methods.
