Book Description
Excerpt from The Monthly Journal of the American Unitarian Association, Vol. 9: September 1868 It may be asked what, then, will be left for the Sun day-school Society to do. Those who have been familiar with its operations the last two years, and have watched the labors Of our deeply lamented Mr. Walker, need not be told. NO one can estimate the service of such a man, clothed with the authority Of a great, organized society, in infusing life into this department Of the Christian Church. Our people must be made to realize, that it is on the religious education of the young that our best hopes as a denomination depend. Then, again, even where Sunday schools are in earnest Operation, there is great need of better system; and there is room for the exercise Of the wisdom of our wisest man, and the ability of our ablest, in reconstructing the methods Of teaching in the schools. We know that many, all over the country, will recognize the importance Of having some one to whom all questions in regard to Sunday-school management and instruction can be referred, and whose thoughts are wholly given to their consideration. Book Description
Excerpt from The Monthly Journal of the American Unitarian Association, Vol. 1: January, 1860 Friends and subscribers have fearfully decreased since the mutinies (i refer particularly to American and English merchants); and expenses of food and clothing, taxes on every thing, &c., &c., have increased in the same proportion. Our remaining friends, too, feel poor, with the exception of several Calcutta young men, who have embraced our views, like Thomas Brown, William Theobald, Charles Falk, and two or three others, who subscribe generously. Your experience of the uctuating state of things in some of our Western cities will aid you to understand this. Happily, our Hindoo subscribers remain stanch to a man; but most of their salaries range between three Or four to twenty dollars a month, and families dependent on them. No; I am wrong: there are half a' dozen Hin doo Deists, who, at the very first, subscribed a rupee a month; and these, expressly because we were too Chris tian for them, have dropped off.
