Book Description
Excerpt from The Modern Pulpit Viewed in Its Relation to the State of Society College at Spring Hill, near Birmingham. The plan of a building, to be raised by public subscription, ufficiently spacious to become the residence of fifty students, and which, with its furniture, will cost, it is calculated, little less than has been agreed upon; and such progress has been made in Obtaining contributions toward that Object, through the inde fatigable labours of my esteemed friend and brother, the Rev. Timothy East, as to warrant the expectation, that within five years the intended edifice will be raised. Early in the next year, also, a building, on a scale no less extended, and dedicated to the same Objects, will be completed near Manchester, nearly the whole cost. Of which has been met by the liberality of the dissenting churches in Lancashire belonging to one denomination only. Book Description
Excerpt from The Modern Pulpit: A Study of Homiletic Sources and Characteristics The title of this volume will readily suggest its object. It is an attempt to interpret the preaching of our day. It undertakes to get back of it, into its sources, to characterize its distinctive peculiarities and to estimate its value. In Representative Modern Preachers, published two years ago, the author invited attention to a few prominent preachers of different schools, as concrete exemplifications of the preaching of the last century. The present volume is more fundamental and comprehensive and may be regarded as supplemental. It would look at the preaching of our day in the light of those chief agencies of the modern world that have powerfully affected it. Influences that were active in the last century and in the century preceding, and that have revolutionized it, are analyzed and classified; qualities that are prominent in it, distinctive of it, and common to it, are summarized; and the field of concrete illustration is greatly enlarged. It is the Protestant pulpit that furnishes the material of our investigation. For it is Protestantism only that in the fullest sense may be said to have, either in theory or in fact, a modern pulpit. The preaching of the Roman Catholic Church is not underestimated, nor its value minimized. It has notable merits of its own and is worthy of careful study. It often reaches a great height of artistic excellence, as well as of moral and spiritual power. But it has no time-spirit It assumes to be superior to modern life. It would dominate the modern world, not be dominated by it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Pulpit: Its Relations to Our National Crisis, a Sermon, Preached in Fifth Avenue and Nineteenth Street Presbyterian Church Then said he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's. - Matt. xxii. 21. The efforts of bad men to injure the cause, of religion, and to gain for themselves a cheap popularity by destroying the influence of its faithful teachers, has given occasion to the utterance and the defence of some of the most important and precious truths of divine revelation. Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Masters of Pulpit Discourse Most the criticisms in this volume were written during the lifetime of their several subjects, and then published anonymously as a series under a common title in "The Homilctic Review." It was from the first in the thought of the author to gather them eventually into a book. When the time approached for doing this, he, with a view to making the list of preachers considered inclusive enough to satisfy any just expectation which the proposal of such a volume might be conceived as awakening, felt it desirable to add a few names not embraced in the original series. The supplementary papers resulting were published independently under the name of the author. It was believed that to change the tense in which these papers were first written, and to recast their form, would be to deprive them of a certain vividness due to the contemporaneous conditions attending and alternating their production. Accordingly, though they have been carefully reconsidered and revised throughout, and retrenched slightly in some cases, and in some cases considerably enlarged, still they are substantially the same in their text and their tenor as when they originally appeared. The author, however, in the present reproduction of his criticisms, has acted somewhat as a kind of posthumous editor to himself, prefacing nearly all of them with explanations and comments which he hopes will be found pertinent and acceptable. Book Description
Excerpt from The Power of the Pulpit: Or Thoughts Addressed to Christian Ministers and Those Who Hear Them Knows its own bitterness, and a stranger does not intermeddle with its joy. For the purpose of presenting our subject in as practical a light as I am able, I propose to advert to the fact itself that the pulpit has power; to show what are the constituent ele ments which invest it with this moral influence; to point out the duties of ministers themselves in order to make full proof of the power with which it is invested; and to specify the obligations which rest on the church of God to give it its due place and importance. It is to the first of these thoughts that we shall devote the first five chapters, - the fact itself that the pulpit has power.
