Book Description
Excerpt from The Missouri Dental Journal, 1870, Vol. 2 Extracted from the "Transactions of the American Medical Association for 1869." Dr. Lewis A. Sayre, of New York, presented, by request, the following paper of Dr. Whitehead of New York, which described the mode adopted by him in operations for the cure of cleft palate, involving the partial destruction of the palatine processes of the superior maxillary bones. "One of the earliest descriptions of an obturator for the occlusion of acquired defects of the palatine vault is due to Ambroise Pare. "The first attempt to close, by a surgical operation, fissure of the soft palate was made in 1816 by Graefe of Berlin, but the first successful operation for this infirmity was accomplished by Roax in 1819. The operation of staphyloraphy soon acquired a prominent position in the eyes of surgeons, and found much favor with some who skillfully imitated Roux's ingenious example. "The names of a number of American surgeons are favorably associated with the early history of this operation. Distinguished among them are those of J. Mason Warren, of Mass., Pancoaat, of Penn., and Mettauer, of Virginia. The successful operations for cleft of the soft palate stimulated Roux, Kreimer, Warren, and others to essay the closure of fissures of the hard palate. A very successful case by Warren, attested the triumph of American surgery over the efforts of Roux and others. Furguson, by a proper division of the levator palati muscle, improved the operation of staphyloraphy, and made its success more certain. Book Description
Excerpt from The Missouri Dental Journal, 1872, Vol. 4 In conclusion, gentlemen, I have to show you this man, who states that he has a small pistol-ball imbedded in the side of his lower jaw, it having been in that position for two days. I can not detect it through the wound, but I find that my probe is very nearly at the root of the first molar tooth, and as I cut down through the gum, I can easily feel a small, hard body, which I now lift away, and which you see is that which we seek. A for eigh body should always be removed unless it is quite certain that the operation for removal will be of more injury than is likely to result at any time from the retention. These bodies do sometimes become encysted, but more frequently give rise to much inconvenience, and especially if sharp may be moved by the pressure of surrounding parts until they occasion serious mischief. There is an interesting paper published in the Proceed ings of the Med. Chir. Soc. Vol. I. P. 71, by Dr. Bence Jones, in relation to magnetic indications of the presence of iron bodies in the human tissues. Book Description
Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1890, Vol. 2 The following was read before the ads. Of Europe, in Baden Baden, in 1878, and am happy to say that the views expressed then, have worked their way slowly to the front, and to-day are known under the popular title of Combination Fillings. We have arrived at this result through an enforced eclecticism in our treatment of teeth, by grasping at, and making use of every material offered to us, in our vain efforts to prevent decay, and preserve the organs confided to the care of our experience. Ten years is a fair time in which to decide the important query: Have we gained greater knowledge in this time to enable us to save more teeth than in 1879? Are more teeth saved, comparatively, to-day than formerly? Let each individual practitioner ask himself these questions, and answer them for his own satisfaction. Every man knows where he has failed, so let him try again, and try something else than that in which he has failed, and find out new results as beneficial or otherwise, until he developes a natural eclectic knowledge of the manner and material he will use, according to the case. This can only take place with surety when the patient is a regular visitor, and one has time to note the perma nency of the filling material used.
