Excerpt from San Diego Mission California, in the early days, was divided into four mili tary districts. The headquarters or garrisons were located at San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Francisco, respectively. These military posts provided the guards for the Missions situated within the limits of their jurisdiction. The military district of San Diego embraced the Missions of San Diego, San Luis Rey, San Juan Capistrano, and San Gabriel, of which the City of Los Angeles in spiritual mat ters was a dependency. Although independent of one an other, a sort of union or connection existed among the Missions of the district. This suggested the geographical rather than the chronological order in relating the local his tory of the twenty-one Missions. Like the author's General History on the Missions, this Local Account is almost entirely compiled 'from the docu mentary sources enumerated and qualified in the Introduc tion to his second volume of The Missions and Missionaries of California. Numerous other works on the subject have been published, but they generally reveal the mind of the writers rather than historical facts. As a rule, such scribes never saw a Spanish document, nor would they know how to use it if they happened to see one. Hence their produc tions on California abound in such glaring errors and even wilful misstatements as to be of little or no use to the author whose sole aim is to present complete and accurate informa tion. The reader may confidently rely on the statements made in this work, since they are based on official docu ments and other trustworthy authorities. Scrupulous care has been exercised to insure accurate figures, notably in the Tables compiled from the Annual and Biennial Reports of the missionaries. Excerpt from book: San Antonio De Pala And Its Hanging Garden fip%ADRE Peyri's evangelical appetite was by no means yp appeased by gathering in only those Gentiles who dwelt within easy reach of his Mission San Luis Rey. The mountain country twenty miles to the eastward was also well populated, but the people were shy of coming to the Mission; so, in 1816, Peyri, Mahomet-wise, went to the mountain, founding in the beautiful little valley of Pala,1 along the upper waters of the San Luis Rey River, a Mission outpost which he dedicated to the Paduan St. Anthony. Here he stationed his companion friar, and within a couple of years, it is said, a thousand converts were added to the Mission roll. This establishment was never officially a Mission, but simply an appanage of San Luis Rey ? an asistencia, in Spanish parlance. Nevertheless, it was in effect a Mission, with its church, its Padres' quarters, its corrals and storehouses and orchards; and in its tall campanario or belfry ? still intact, built to itself apart from the church ? it possesses a feature unique in Mission architecture, if not the world's. After secularization, Pala, of course, went the way of all, and its buildings fell into decay, although the occasional visits of a secular priest, and the continued interest of Indians inhabiting the hills roundabout, were instrumental in keeping part of them fromentire obliteration. Then, in 1903, came a new lease of life through the transfer thither of about three hundred Indians evicted from their old-time home on Warner's Ranch; and with this accession of communicants to Pala the Catholic Church had a priest take up his permanent residence there.
