Book Description
The MemoryCare Plays As Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia become increasingly prevalent; the dramatic arts can help provide needed insight and understanding into this looming societal challenge. Chosen by a juried panel from over 90 submissions nationwide, the three professionally crafted plays contained in The MemoryCare Plays anthology strive to dramatize the full impact of progressive memory disorders upon the individual, and to illustrate the richness and complexity of the caregiving relationship, with all of its challenges and rewards. The MemoryCare Plays are edited by Dr. Margaret A. Noel, founder of MemoryCare, a non-profit charitable organization in Asheville, NC, that provides integrated services for persons with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias and their caregivers. The plays include Steering Into the Skid by Deborah Ann Percy and Arnold Johnston, In the Garden by Matthew Widman, and Riding the Waves by L.E. Grabowski-Cotton. Each work in this anthology is introduced by its author. Steering Into the Skid focuses on Amanda and Tim, both in their sixties, and in twelve short scenes set in their SUV traces a year in their life together from New Year's Day to New Year's Eve. As the months pass, the changes wrought by advancing age and Alzheimer's disease force each character to adjust to new demands on their imperfect but loving marriage. In the Garden portrays a family in crisis. Beloved father Arthur is fighting a losing battle with Alzheimer's disease and his three grown children, Peter, Karen and Jamie have gathered at the family house to decide what to do. But the choices are not easy. While Arthur may wander off at times, or lash out in anger or forget the names of his grandchildren, at other times he is lucid, funny, and wise. Long ingrained familial tensions boil to the surface as Peter, Karen, and Jamie struggle to treasure their father's last cogent moments before he is lost to them forever. Riding the Waves tells the story of Isabel Epstein, a woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and the struggles her son and daughter experience as a result. The inspiration for this play was the idea that the ocean could serve as a metaphor for the coming and going of memories. The waves interweave both Isabel's past and present so that the reader or audience experiences the plight of an individual with Alzheimer's. All proceeds from this anthology will be donated to benefit families affected by dementia. The playwrights have generously agreed to allow MemoryCare to grant other nonprofit organizations dedicated to dementia care the opportunity to utilize their work for educational, advocacy or fundraising events, provided that all profits raised from any such event will be applied to the care or support of persons affected by dementia. The MemoryCare Plays incorporate the details for non-profits that would like to use these one-acts and provides discussion questions for each play. The MemoryCare Plays, all by widely published and produced playwrights, are beautifully crafted works that poignantly portray different aspects of the challenges posed by progressive memory disorders. These plays, whether read or staged, are rich with resources to educate a community; they provide authentic snapshots of how dementia uniquely affects individuals, and powerful testimony to its impact on our most intimate relationships.

The Problem of Alzheimer's
Author: Jason Karlawish
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
ISBN: 1250218748
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 269
Book Description
A definitive and compelling book on one of today's most prevalent illnesses. In 2020, an estimated 5.8 million Americans had Alzheimer’s, and more than half a million died because of the disease and its devastating complications. 16 million caregivers are responsible for paying as much as half of the $226 billion annual costs of their care. As more people live beyond their seventies and eighties, the number of patients will rise to an estimated 13.8 million by 2050. Part case studies, part meditation on the past, present and future of the disease, The Problem of Alzheimer's traces Alzheimer’s from its beginnings to its recognition as a crisis. While it is an unambiguous account of decades of missed opportunities and our health care systems’ failures to take action, it tells the story of the biomedical breakthroughs that may allow Alzheimer’s to finally be prevented and treated by medicine and also presents an argument for how we can live with dementia: the ways patients can reclaim their autonomy and redefine their sense of self, how families can support their loved ones, and the innovative reforms we can make as a society that would give caregivers and patients better quality of life. Rich in science, history, and characters, The Problem of Alzheimer's takes us inside laboratories, patients' homes, caregivers’ support groups, progressive care communities, and Jason Karlawish's own practice at the Penn Memory Center.

The Alzheimer's Solution
Author: Dean Sherzai
Publisher: HarperCollins
ISBN: 0062666495
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 218
Book Description
A revolutionary, proven program for reversing the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline from award winning neurologists and codirectors of the Brain Health and Alzheimer's Prevention Program at Loma Linda University Medical Center Over 47 million people are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease worldwide. While all other major diseases are in decline, deaths from Alzheimer’s have increased radically. What you or your loved ones don’t yet know is that 90 percent of Alzheimer’s cases can be prevented. Based on the largest clinical and observational study to date, neurologists and codirectors of the Brain Health and Alzheimer’s Prevention Program at Loma Linda University Medical Center, Drs. Dean and Ayesha Sherzai, offer in The Alzheimer’s Solution the first comprehensive program for preventing Alzheimer’s disease and improving cognitive function. Alzheimer’s disease isn’t a genetic inevitability, and a diagnosis does not need to come with a death sentence. Ninety percent of grandparents, parents, husbands, and wives can be spared. Ninety percent of us can avoid ever getting Alzheimer’s, and for the 10 percent with strong genetic risk for cognitive decline, the disease can be delayed by ten to fifteen years. This isn’t an estimate or wishful thinking; it’s a percentage based on rigorous science and the remarkable results the Sherzais have seen firsthand in their clinic. This much-needed revolutionary book reveals how the brain is a living universe, directly influenced by nutrition, exercise, stress, sleep, and engagement. In other words: what you feed it, how you treat it, when you challenge it, and the ways in which you allow it to rest. These factors are the pillars of the groundbreaking program you’ll find in these pages, which features a personalized assessment for evaluating risk, a five-part program for prevention and symptom-reversal, and day-by-day guides for optimizing cognitive function. You can prevent Alzheimer’s disease from affecting you, your family, friends, and loved ones. Even with a diagnosis, you can reverse cognitive decline and add vibrant years to your life. The future of your brain is finally within your control.

Creative Care
Author: Anne Basting
Publisher: HarperCollins
ISBN: 0062906194
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 271
Book Description
A MacArthur Genius Grant recipient pioneers a radical change in how we interact with older loved ones, especially those experiencing dementia, as she introduces a proven method that uses the creative arts to bring light and joy to the lives of elders. In Creative Care, Anne Basting lays the groundwork for a widespread transformation in our approach to elder care and uses compelling, touching stories to inspire and guide us all—family, friends, and health professionals—in how to connect and interact with those living with dementia. A MacArthur Genius Grant recipient, Basting tells the story of how she pioneered a radical change in how we interact with our older loved ones. Now used around the world, this proven method has brought light and joy to the lives of elders—and those who care for them. Here, for the first time, everyone can learn these methods. Early in her career, Basting noticed a problem: today’s elderly—especially those experiencing dementia and Alzheimer’s— are often isolated in nursing homes or segregated in elder-care settings, making the final years of life feel lonely and devoid of meaning. To alleviate their sense of aloneness, Basting developed a radical approach that combines methods from the world of theater and improvisation with evidence-based therapies that connect people using their own creativity and imagination. Rooted in twenty-five years of research, these new techniques draw on core creative exercises—such as “Yes, and . . .” and “Beautiful Questions.” This approach fosters storytelling and active listening, allowing elders to freely share ideas and stories without worrying about getting the details “correct.” Basting’s research has shown that these practices stimulate the brain and awaken the imagination to add wonder and awe to patients’ daily lives—and provide them a means of connection, both with the world and with those caring for them. Creative Care promises to bring light and hope to a community that needs it most.

UNBELIEVABLE Journey with the Lord (A True Story)
Author: Joani C. Boland
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 183
Book Description
Why would anyone want to buy this book from an unknown first-time author? The answer is simple. If you say to yourself, "This could never happen to me," "I wouldn't be so stupid," or "My faith is so strong that nothing or no one can ever shake it," then this book is for you. This book is not just for the believers of Christ but also for nonbelievers. No matter what struggles you face--financial, death, faith, loneliness, and the like--there is a living God who loves you no matter what you have experienced or where you are in life. God loves you before you were born. Many people own a Bible, but it is never read. The book sits on a shelf, collecting dust. My husband Harry and I read and discussed Scripture along with prayer time and reading a daily devotional. In facilitating Bible lessons to small groups in our home, I would always say, the Bible contains all the answers for how we should live our lives. It is a guide to daily living in a fallen world. Think of his commands as a moral compass, as it makes us conscious of sin. So how could this fall from grace happen to a faith-loving Christian like me? My intent in writing this book is to provide you with the tools and means to give you hope in our troubled world, and to learn how not to become bitter but to forgive, to keep a sense of humor, and to never give up on yourself. 84
