Book Description
An Economist Best Book of 2018 New York Times Book Review Editor’s Pick “Gripping [and] splendid.… An enormous contribution to our understanding of Marshall.”—Washington Post At the end of World War II, General George Marshall took on what he thought was a final mission—this time not to win a war, but to stop one. In China, conflict between Communists and Nationalists threatened to suck in the United States and escalate into revolution. Marshall’s charge was to cross the Pacific, broker a peace, and prevent a Communist takeover, all while staving off World War III. At first, the results seemed miraculous. But as they started to come apart, Marshall was faced with a wrenching choice—one that would alter the course of the Cold War, define the US-China relationship, and spark one of the darkest-ever turns in American political life. The China Mission offers a gripping, close-up view of the central figures of the time—from Marshall, Mao, and Chiang Kai-shek to Eisenhower, Truman, and MacArthur—as they stood face-to-face and struggled to make history, with consequences and lessons that echo today.

Book Description
As soon as Rebecca entered the house, she could tell something was off. Just a feeling but she knew her home and something wasn’t right. She stood for a moment without turning on the lights. She moved slowly through the living room. Nothing looked out of place. She started toward the kitchen and there it was. A shadow. Now she wished she had listened to Hershel and kept her small pistol in her purse. Hershel had bought it for her after their experience with the drug smugglers six months ago. She had even taken lessons but none of that was going to do her any good now. The pistol was upstairs in the draw of her bedside table. And the shadow was between her and the stairs. Hershel always said if you can’t get away and you have no weapon---hide. So that’s what she did. Rebecca slipped inside the closet just off the living room. She felt in her purse for her phone and being as quiet as possible called Andrew. As soon as he answered she said, “I need some help, someone is in the house. I’m hiding in the closet off the living room. How quick can you get here?” Andrew’s entire body went cold. “Rebecca don’t move I’m on the way. I can be there in less than ten minutes. Just stay quiet. I’m on the way.” He repeated. “Rebecca, do you hear me I’m coming?” But Rebecca didn’t answer. She was already gone.
