Book Description
The Lymphatic System in Colorectal Cancer: Basic Concepts, Pathology, Imaging, and Treatment Perspectives provides an in-depth overview on the role of the lymphatic system in the pathogenesis and treatment of colorectal cancer. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the lymphatic system in colorectal cancer, with topics ranging from cancer biology and mathematical modeling to surgical approaches and novel imaging techniques. This book is valuable for cancer researchers, oncologists and anyone interested in the biology and treatment of colorectal cancer. Bringing together internationally renowned experts, the book's chapters encompass relevant content to help readers understand complex subjects. Lymphatic spread is one of the hallmarks of locally advanced colorectal cancer that adversely affects prognosis. Nevertheless, the molecular pathogenesis, dynamics and prognostic significance of lymphatic spread remain poorly understood. At the same time, novel surgical approaches such as complete mesocolic excision and sentinel node identification are being introduced, but their value remains uncertain. Presents a multidisciplinary approach, allowing readers to identify relevant fields of collaboration and inspire novel research endeavors in the field Discusses novel imaging techniques such as near-infrared that is being introduced in clinical practice as a tool for identifying sentinel nodes and lymphatic pathways Brings together international experts who shed light on the most relevant aspects of lymphatic spread in cancer of the bowel, underlying mechanisms, and the best method to avoid or treat it

Book Description
Although lymphoscintigraphy was originally introduced into clinical routine for identification of the cause of peripheral edema, more recently it has been widely applied for radioguided biopsy of the sentinel lymph node in patients with solid cancers. The procedure is now considered crucial for adequate planning of oncologic surgery in a growing number of cancers. This atlas presents a collection of richly illustrated teaching cases that demonstrate the clinical relevance and impact of lymphoscintigraphy in different pathologic conditions. After introductory chapters on the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of lymphatic circulation, the role of lymphoscintigraphy in differential diagnosis of peripheral edema and characterization of intracavitary lymph effusions is addressed. The principal focus of the book, however, is on the use of lymphoscintigraphic mapping for radioguided sentinel node biopsy in cutaneous melanoma and cancers at a range of anatomic sites. The most commonly observed lymphoscintigraphic patterns are depicted, and anatomic variants and technical pitfalls of the procedure receive careful attention. The role of tomographic multimodality imaging is also considered. The atlas will be an excellent learning tool for residents in nuclear medicine and other specialists with an interest in the field.

Book Description
Rectal cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers world-wide. It is also a paradigm for multimodal management, as the combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy is often necessary to achieve the optimal outcome. Recently, international experts met in Heidelberg, Germany to discuss the latest developments in the management of rectal cancer, including the anatomic and pathologic basis, staging tools, surgical concepts including fast-track surgery and laparoscopic resection, functional outcome after surgery and the role of radio- and chemotherapy. This monograph summarizes this meeting and gives an extensive overview of the current concepts in management of rectal cancer.

Book Description
This book presents an Asian perspective on how the treatment of colorectal cancer can be optimized and standardized in ways that take into account technological advances and the trend towards individually tailored therapy. Readers will find careful, well-illustrated descriptions of the standard surgical techniques for rectal cancer and colon cancer that have contributed to recent improvements in 5-year survival rates in the Asia-Pacific region, where the incidence of colorectal cancer has been rising alarmingly due to lifestyle changes. The vital role now being played by minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic options receives detailed scrutiny. Extent and timing of surgery, patient safety, risk of complications, and unresolved issues are all discussed. Furthermore, the use of surgery within the context of multimodal management including chemotherapy and radiotherapy is explained and an integrated approach for stage IV and recurrent disease is described. The book will serve as a valuable reference for young surgeons who are in training, experienced practitioners who want to enhance their knowledge and skills, and all others who wish to learn about this field.

Book Description
Metastases determine malignancy. The main attention so far has been focused upon organ metastases. The molecular mechanisms thereof, while far from being totally elucidated, are increasingly well understood. Modern diagnostic tools now enable detection and precise localization of small lesions. In contrast, our knowl edge and diagnostic capabilities regarding metastatic spread to the'lymphatic system are rather limited. However, there have re cently been a number of interesting advances. It is the aim of this volume to submit these developments to detailed analysis. The therapeutic relevance of enhanced sensitivity in detection of lymph node metastases has to be considered in the light of in creased morbidity versus eventual prognostic improvements by modification of therapy. An interesting concept which might im prove diagnostic accuracy while reducing operative morbidity is the "sentinel node" technique. Surgical standards are lacking, however, and many fundamental questions pertaining to precise lymphatic mapping remain unanswered. Whether the sentinel node concept is of general relevance or whether it is applicable in only a few organs remains to be determined. This book offers intensive discussion of the concept from methodological and tu mor biological viewpoints. World-renowned experts with long term involvement in related basic and clinical research provide the reader with a broad survey of actual knowledge together with a critical appraisal of recent and future developments. We sincerely hope this book succeeds in providing an outlook as a reference for all clinicians on future prospects and serving and researchers in this extremely important field.

Book Description
In human solid tumors, nodal status is the most important prognostic indicator for patient outcome. Recent developments in the sentinel lymph node concept have resulted in new procedures to define the first draining node as the primary gateway through which the cancer will spread. In From Local Invasion to Metastatic Cancer: Involvement of Distant Sites Through the Lymphovascular System, a panel of international authorities takes an in-depth look at the role of the lymphovascular system in the spread of cancer. The authors summarize the findings of the Second International Symposium on Cancer Metastasis: Basis for Rational Therapy summit. Specifically, the book presents important developments in the biology and clinical understanding of cancer metastasis, describes the relationship between tumor microenvironment and proliferation, and defines the process of lymphangiogenesis and angiogenesis with special reference to cancer metastasis. From Local Invasion to Metastatic Cancer: Involvement of Distant Sites Through the Lymphovascular System provides oncologists, radiologists, and cancer researchers the necessary information to study and develop new strategies to curb the process of metastasis.
