Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Samuel Morley Early in the present year I was honoured by the family of the late Mr. Samuel Morley with the request that I would undertake the responsible task of preparing an account of his life for publication. Having consented, I was entrusted, on the 8th of February, when on a visit to Hall Place, with a mass of correspondence - the accumulation of a life time. Large as the amount of material was, there was comparatively little of the kind that a biographer most prizes. There were no journals or diaries, save a very brief record of some of his early travels, and note-books of engagements. He was not a voluminous correspondent, and there was scarcely a document that gave a glimpse into his inner life and thoughts. I found that his name was not indissolubly linked with any great historic movement that in his private life there were no striking incidents or sur prises; and that some of the elements generally deemed essential in biography were almost, if not altogether, wanting. Book Description
First published in 1978, this multi-disciplinary study embraces a wide selection of topics ranging from family intimacy and authoritarianism to the family as a unit for launching social reforms. Subjects treated in the nine essays include the Victorian attitude to childbirth, the role of the nanny, the power of the upper-class paterfamilias, the pattern of family work and fertility, and incest among the Victorian working classes. The book is introduced by a critical survey of the state of family history and the need for new studies. From the essays, the Victorian family emerges as both a refuge from society and a springboard into it, and as an important unit for the study of the repression and exploitation of women and children in Victorian society. This book will be of interest to those studying Victorian history and society.

Book Description
First published in 1952, this is a full-scale and definitive account of the life and work of Sir Edwin Chadwick. Among the sources used are the Chadwick Papers, the Peel, Place, Russell and Gladstone Papers, the Home Office, Treasury and Ministry of Health papers and the minutes and documents of the Metropolitan Commission of Sewers. Centred on this mass of material, this book demonstrates that the great social reforms of the Victorian age should be attributed, not so much to the Cabinets, but to the labours of a handful of civil servants. It also argues that Edwin Chadwick was the most influential of these civil servants and through this illuminating biography, Professor Finer gives an account of early Victorian administration as seen from inside. This book will be of interest to those studying Victorian social reform, the history of the welfare state and social policy.
