Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Jacob Henle If ever I had an inspiration, it was on the day when I first spoke to you about Jacob Henle. I explained that although he was one of the greatest medical scientists of modern times, practically nothing about his career had appeared in the English language. Not being a medical woman, you had never heard of Henle, and were naturally and properly bored. But since it is impossible for you to be unsympathetic, the sub ject was again broached, and somehow we decided to do Henle - as an experiment. Your share of the work was to consist in translating all the available German data, after which I was to use your translations as a basis for my own work. The first article you undertook happened to be desultory and tedi ous, and after being engulfed in its discursiveness and battling with its technicalities, you would have abandoned your self-appointed task, but for two reasons; in the first place, you were probably curious to see what I could accomplish with such unpromising material; and in the second place, you are no shirker. So the work went on, and you trans lated the notices by Leyden, Flemming, and Pagel, the essay by Wal deyer, and Kussmaul's witty chapter in his Memoirs from the Youth of an Old Physician. By this time, the greatness of the man had grown upon us, and the experimental stage was over. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Since it was first published in 1955, A Short History of Medicine has been hailed as the best available book of its kind: a concise and readable introduction to the history of medicine, written for students and professionals alike. In twenty short chapters, Ackerknecht traces the fascinating saga of man's progress in the science and art of medicine, from primitive times through early civilizations, classical antiquity, the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and into the mid-twentieth century. The struggles and triumphs of some of history's most renowned medical pioneers -- Hippocrates, Harvey, Jenner, Osler, and many more -- are here, but this is not a catalog of individual accomplishments. Ackerknecht strikes a balance between the history of medicine and its social and cultural background; between medical science and medical practice; and between clinical and preventative medicine, illuminating not only the world of medicine but the position of medicine in the world. --

Book Description
Why is understanding causation so important in philosophy and the sciences? Should causation be defined in terms of probability? Whilst causation plays a major role in theories and concepts of medicine, little attempt has been made to connect causation and probability with medicine itself. Causality, Probability, and Medicine is one of the first books to apply philosophical reasoning about causality to important topics and debates in medicine. Donald Gillies provides a thorough introduction to and assessment of competing theories of causality in philosophy, including action-related theories, causality and mechanisms, and causality and probability. Throughout the book he applies them to important discoveries and theories within medicine, such as germ theory; tuberculosis and cholera; smoking and heart disease; the first ever randomized controlled trial designed to test the treatment of tuberculosis; the growing area of philosophy of evidence-based medicine; and philosophy of epidemiology. This book will be of great interest to students and researchers in philosophy of science and philosophy of medicine, as well as those working in medicine, nursing and related health disciplines where a working knowledge of causality and probability is required.
