Book Description
Excerpt from Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin, Vol. 2 England had lost her colonies, though no one yet suspected it. Madness now seized both parties; only there was method in the madness of the colonists. It is not ours to relate the public events which accompanied and followed the scenes just described: such as the destruction of the tea in Boston harbor; the passage of Lord North's avenging measure, called the Boston Port Bill; the adoption of the cause of Boston as their own by the other colonies; six regiments of British troops posted in Boston; the calm protests of Washington, Lee, and Jefferson; the wild eloquence of Patrick Henry; the passage of the bill transferring political offenders to England for trial, with their train of witnesses and advocates; the torrents of petitions against these measures; the haughty rejection of these petitions; the tumults in America; the exasperating insolence of the king's speeches to Parliament; and, above all, the meeting of the Continental Congress at Philadelphia. All these things have been eloquently told by Mr. Bancroft, and are familiar to decently informed persons in every land. America became the universal topic, France appearing to be more interested in it than England, though there were in Parliament fifty "field-night" debates upon America during the next three or four years. How the tories raved against America! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Writings of Benjamin Franklin, Vol. 2: Collected and Edited With a Life and Introduction; 1722-1750 Passages in sailing westward than in sailing eastward, because Franklin desired that the letter should not be re printed. He discovered that his theory, which related to the diurnal motion of the earth, was quite untenable, and he so informed Jonathan Williams in a letter dated January 19, 1786. The Prefaces to Poor Richard's Almanac are here for the first time reprinted in any collection of Franklin's works. All are included in this volume except those that relate to the making of wine, the appearance of the planets, and Middleton's account of life in the region of Hudson's Bay. Excerpt from Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin, Vol. 1 Not until 1817, when Dr. Franklin had been dead twenty-seven years, was his Autobiography given to the world in his own lan guage and without abridgment. It was published, then, in the edition of his works edited by his grandson; who had delayed the issue, as it is supposed, from a regard to the interests of his aged father, a pensioner of the English government, who died in 1813. Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of Benjamin Franklin, Vol. 2 of 2 In the year 1760, upon the prospect of a peace with France, the Earl of Bath addressed a Letter to Two Great Men (mr. Pitt and the Duke of Newcastle) on the terms necessary to be insisted upon in the negotiation. He preferred the acquisition of Canada, to acquisitions in the West Indies. In the same year there appeared Remarks on the letter addressed to two great men, con taining opposite opinions on this and other subjects. At this moment a philosopher stepped into the contro versy, and wrote a pamphlet entitled, The Interest of Great Britain considered, with Regard to her Colonies, &c. The arguments he used, appear to have carried weight with them, for Canada was kept by the peace. The above piece first appeared in the shape of a pamphlet, printed for Becket, 1761.
