Book Description
Excerpt from Select Letters: With An English Translation Compared with his Confessions, St. Augustine's Letters have received but slight attention, even from many of his professed biographers, and for each edition of the one there have appeared, at a moderate estimate, several hundred editions, translations or studies of the other. Yet a man's autobiography gives only his own account and interpretation of him self and his deeds his letters, if they are genuine and spontaneous, show him directly, without the distor tion of his own explanations and self-justifications. The present selection, barely a quarter of Augustine's extant correspondence, contains, it is hoped, enough to exhibit the human interest of the man and his environment excluding almost all the lengthier letters, often of the bulk of minor treatises, and those solely or chiefly concerned with questions of doctrine, I have sought to present those which best reveal him in contact with the varied and busy life of his time. Book Description
Excerpt from Some Letters From the Alcazar: A Mystery of St. Augustine E custom to haunt what is known in St. Augustine as the m Old Fort, and which was commenced, albeit in logs, under mine own administration. Of late years this fort hath been almost deserted save by day, but its sole custodian hath been of so zealous a disposition that I have scarce been able to wander at my will. Now, this too zealous custodian having been removed, I came out somewhat before the hour of midnight, hoping perchance to affright with my groaning and the clanging of unseen chains some belated wayfarer. Haply, two such 8 walked upon the sea wall, discoursing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Saint Augustine Yet slight as this work may seem, it will be of no small value if it makes St Augustine and his teaching known even in rough outline to numbers who have neither the leisure nor the ability to do for themselves what M. Hatzfeld has done for them; still more, if it creates a desire in more thoughtful minds to enter into closer sympathy with a great soul, the contemplation of whose depth and width, as it were of some calm ocean expanse, stills and tranquillises our troubled spirits, and makes them for a moment forget their own littleness. Book Description
Excerpt from Leaves From St. Augustine Something like this sailor's heart of oak, cased in triple brass, seems to me her courage who set her frail hark to traverse the ocean of St. Augustine, and to give in the compass of a small volume a notion of the beauty, the vastness, the proportion, and the grandeur of mind in one who is said to have acted upon a larger number of men than any one since the time of St. Paul. I would fain hope that she also has brought her bark safe to shore, and that such as think it worth their while to read the words herein selected of that great Saint, and Genius no less great, will be able to form some notion of the personal character, the doc trine, the faith, the hope, and the charity of the man who ranks among the Fathers of the Church as St. Paul among the Apostles. Book Description
Excerpt from The Letters of St. Augustine He changed his opinion also on the authorship of the Epistle to the Hebrews. Whereas in the early part of his career he always ascribes it to S.Paul (cf. De Div. Q. lxxxiii., lxxv. I; written in A.D. 389), after the year 409 he ceases to make that ascription. Thus he says in one place simply "scriptum est ad Hebræos." (Letter 187, § 34, A.D. 417.) The letters fall quite easily into certain main divisions: 1. It is natural to group together the letters of the early period written while he was a layman, and as a priest: all in fact written before the date of his consecration to the episcopate. 2. Next to this may be placed the letters on Paganism. These form a suitable introduction to his great reply to Paganism, The City of God. It would be very natural to suggest that the next group should be those concerned with Manichæism; that form of Oriental Dualism to which Augustine was an adherent for some nine years, and from which he escaped with so much difficulty. But it is a singular fact that nothing survives of Augustine's correspondence with Manichæans. There are of course allusions to the controversy, and cases noted of its intrusion into the Church, even among the Church's teachers (cf. Letter 236 and Letter 64, § 3).But there is no direct correspondence with the sect or with its leaders. This is all the more remarkable because controversy with the Manichæans occupied a very important place in Augustine's early literary labours. There are his five works against them which a correspondent called the Pentateuch against the Manichæans. There is, above all, the great treatise in reply to Faustus. But there is no separate letter to Faustus, nor indeed to any Manichæan leader. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
