Book Description
Excerpt from The Music-Lesson of Confucius: And Other Poems The music spoke no more its wonted sounds, But whispered mysteries in a broken tongue Which urged him sorely. Then Confucius said O secret Music sacred tongue of God I hear thee calling to me, and I come 2 Of old I did but know thy outer form And dreamed not of the spirit hid within The Goddess in the Lotus. Yes, I come, And will not rest - nor will I calm my doubt Till I have seen thee plainly with mine eyes, And palpably have touched thee with my hand, T ken shall I know thee - raised to life for me For what thou truly art. Lo I have heard That in the land of Kin a master lives, So deeply skilled in music, that mankind Begin again to give a glowing faith Unto the golden stories which are told Of the strange harmonies which built the world, And of the melody whose key is God. Now I will travel to the land of Kin, Arid know this sage of music, great Siang, And learn the secret lore which hides within All sweet well-ordered sounds.' Book Description
Excerpt from A Legend of Glencoe: And Other Poems Taken the poet's licence, and am guilty of a wilful anachronism. This was necessary to my plan. The chief design of this legend is to trace the workings of remorse in a superstitious mind, and to illustrate the misery of crime. By means of a poetical tale, I would humbly add my comment to the declaration, that the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest.' The above-mentioned anecdote struck me as furnishing good materials for a purpose of this character; and, by applying it to one of the principal actors in the appalling tragedy of Glencoe, I trust the moral, which it conveys, is rather deepened than otherwise. Of course, it was absolutely necessary that I should introduce into my poem one who was employed in the massacre and I hope to be allowed the licence, yielded times without number, viz., that of narrating as happening to one what in reality happened to another, more especially as the solemn lesson of the incident in. Book Description
Excerpt from The Difference, and Other Poems: Including the Columbian Ode The author of the Columbian Ode grew up in a world which appeared to her not only warless but dedicated to a wise future of peaceful development - for the Franco Prussian war of twenty years earlier seemed, to the imagination of youth, almost as remote an object-lesson as Napoleon's conquests. War was not a reality, but a legend, to her consciousness; and the prophetic optimism at the climax of the ode was not merely a mood inspired by the splendid international courtesies of the great festival, but the sincere utterance of a young poet's pro found faith in the future brotherhood of nations and of men - a brotherhood potent, beyond all imagining, for the loosing of creative energy in vast works and marvellous discoveries. The Diference, written thirty years later, shows not only a change of opinion and feeling from youth to middle-age.
