Book Description
REVIEWERS ARE SAYING: "Think 'The Hangover' mixed with 'Old School' and drenched in wing sauce. Ride shotgun with a group of friends trying to get to a Buffalo Bills game and join in all the crazy shenanigans along the way!" "Laugh-out-loud funny and outrageously clever! Tucker Max type of escapades wrapped up in a plot with more twists-and-turns than a pole dancer." "[Fellow] ladies, this is a must-read if you want a glimpse inside the minds of men. Enlightening, jaw-dropping, and hilarious!" "Holy mother is it funny... but it's not without a lot of heart; the type of heart you can only find in places like Buffalo, NY... in the dead of winter... after four Super Bowl losses in a row." OVERVIEW: Robert's "summer romance" with Jennifer was interrupted when his college buddy, Zabka, returned to Buffalo for a visit. The police report described their reunion antics as, "two knuckleheads on a beyond insane bender." Since then, Jennifer's leash around Robert's neck kept getting shorter and shorter. Now it's mid-December, and Zabka is planning an even bigger road trip back to frigid Buffalo. He envisions a weekend overflowing with beer and girls that, in his words, "climaxes" with the Bills squishing the Dolphins to clinch the division's playoff spot. However, if Jennifer discovers his plans, there's no telling what she'll do. Will drunken chaos spin out of control again? What unexpected trouble is flying up from Miami? When relationships, friendships, and rivalries collide, can anything survive? And where did the midget strippers come from?! Nothing can prepare this incompatible cast of characters for this wild winter weekend.

Book Description
Hall of Fame middleweight prizefighter John Edward Kelly, better known as Nonpareil Jack Dempsey, was one of the most popular athletes in the United States during the late 19th century. To many observers, Dempsey is one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters in ring history. Inside the ropes, he was fearless, poised, quick, agile, and had terrific punching power with both hands. His story is rich--full of amazing highs and terrible lows. He was a poor immigrant Irish boy who scaled great heights to become one of this nation's first sports celebrities. He became a household name, wealthy and popular. But much too soon, it all came crashing down. His violent profession, alcoholism, mental illness, and tuberculosis left little to recognize of the valiant hero of so many battles.

Book Description
The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara was a handsome prince when he entered China. As Guanyin, the bodhisattva was venerated from the eleventh century onward in the shape of a beautiful woman who became a universal savior. Throughout the last millennium, the female Guanyin has enjoyed wide and fervid veneration throughout East Asia and has appeared as a major character in literature and legend. In one tale, Guanyin (as the princess Miaoshan) returns from the dead after being executed by the king, her father, for refusing to marry. The most popular version of this legend is The Precious Scroll of Incense Mountain (Xiangshan baojuan), a long narrative in prose and verse and a work of considerable literary merit. It emphasizes the conflict between father and daughter, in the course of which all conventional arguments against a religious lifestyle are paraded and rebutted. A lengthy description of Guanyin’s visit to the underworld, which focuses on the conflict between grace and justice, is also included. Personal Salvation and Filial Piety offers a complete and fully annotated translation of The Precious Scroll, based on a nineteenth-century edition. The translation is preceded by a substantial introduction that discusses the origin of the text and the genre to which it belongs and highlights the similarities and differences between the scroll and female saints’ lives from medieval Europe. There follows a translation of the much-shorter Precious Scroll of Good-in-Talent and Dragon Daughter, which provides a humorous account of how Guanyin acquired the three acolytes—Sudhana, Nagakanya, and a white parrot—who are often shown surrounding her in popular prints. As the first English-language translation of major "precious scrolls," Personal Salvation and Filial Piety will appeal to a wide range of readers—from scholars of Chinese literature to students of Buddhism. Beyond the field of East Asian studies, it will interest specialists in comparative religion and literature and feminist theologians. Because of its lively and moving narratives, the text is suitable for courses on popular Buddhist religiosity (particularly female religiosity) in Chinese society.

Book Description
At once artistic and utilitarian, West Africa's door locks were decorated with figures that reflected the cultural, spiritual, and philosophical beliefs of the Bamana people of Mali. This work is the accompanying text of an eponymously-titled exhibit, drawn from the author's own collection, presented by the African Art Museum of the S.M.A. in October of 2001. After providing historical and ethnographic background, the author discusses the aesthetic practices demonstrated by the door locks. Finally more detailed examinations of the 67 locks and four doors comprising the exhibit are presented. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Description
Black Elk of the Sioux has been recognized as one of the truly remarkable men of his time in the matter of religious belief and practice. Shortly before his death in August, 1950, when he was the "keeper of the sacred pipe," he said, "It is my prayer that, through our sacred pipe, and through this book in which I shall explain what our pipe really is, peace may come to those peoples who can understand, and understanding which must be of the heart and not of the head alone. Then they will realize that we Indians know the One true God, and that we pray to Him continually." Black Elk was the only qualified priest of the older Oglala Sioux still living when The Sacred Pipe was written. This is his book: he gave it orally to Joseph Epes Brown during the latter's eight month's residence on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, where Black Elk lived. Beginning with the story of White Buffalo Cow Woman's first visit to the Sioux to give them the sacred pip~, Black Elk describes and discusses the details and meanings of the seven rites, which were disclosed, one by one, to the Sioux through visions. He takes the reader through the sun dance, the purification rite, the "keeping of the soul," and other rites, showing how the Sioux have come to terms with God and nature and their fellow men through a rare spirit of sacrifice and determination. The wakan Mysteries of the Siouan peoples have been a subject of interest and study by explorers and scholars from the period of earliest contact between whites and Indians in North America, but Black Elk's account is without doubt the most highly developed on this religion and cosmography. The Sacred Pipe, published as volume thirty-six in the Civilization of the American Indian Series, will be greeted enthusiastically by students of comparative religion, ethnologists, historians, philosophers, and everyone interested in American Indian life.
