Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 82: May 13, 1920 Warms in the sun, refreshes in the breeze, Glows in the stars and blossoms in the trees. That, said Elder Whitney, is an admirable description of the spirit that emanates from God and pervades all creation; but it is not God himself, in whose image man was created. To worship a gift or an emanation from God is a form of idolatry. When, a hundred years ago, the Father and the Son appeared to the boy Joseph Smith - two beings in the form of man - from that hour there was one person, at least, upon this planet who knew what kind of a being God is. It was no chance happening, that took Joseph Smith into the woods to pray, on that glorious spring morning. It was the design of Deity, a predestined event. The hour had struck, and the man was there whom God had provided. Other boys might pray, and their prayers would be answered; but not in this way. All men are not called to be prophets. He was the one ordained for the purpose, the man divinely chosen to usher in the great work of the dispensation of the fulness of times. This is the Saturday night of the world's history, and morning will break upon the Millennium, the thousand years of peace, the Sabbath of the World. That is why all things are in commotion. War, famine, pestilence, earthquake, tempest and tidal wave these are among the predicted signs of the Savior's second coming. Earth must be freed from oppression and cleansed from iniquity. It is God's house, and He is coming to live in it. Bishop Charles W. Nibley was the concluding speaker. Cit-ing some of the fruits of Mormonism during the one hundred years since the Lord revealed himself, he said the world must admit the works of Mormonism are good. Was it not a good work to preach the gospel to the poor and oppressed of the earth, and bring them together in a thrifty working community, where their souls might have peace? Was it not a good work to build a community by co operative efiort? If these are good works, then the tree has put forth good fruit. Is it not a good work for the Mormon Church to support its own school system, in addition to paying taxes as citizens of the state for the support of the public school system? The gospel is a higher and better law than the law of the land. It does not controvert it, it supplements it. The Mormon people challenge the world for loyalty to their country. They teach good citizenship. And the spiritual truths taught by the Mormons: Faith, repentance, baptism by immersion for the remission of sins, the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. Are they not good teachings? The spirit of sacrifice, of service, of work, of courage, are instilled into the hearts of the Latter-day Saints by the power of the Holy Ghost. Thus all the fruits of Mormonism are evidence that its message is true. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 82: November 18, 1920 I am glad that the women have the electoral franchise. I rejoice in all of the great and wonderful advancements that are being made for the benefit of mankind. And I rejoice, above all things. In a knowledge that God lives, that Jesus is the Christ, that Joseph Smith was a prophet of the true and living God; that the gospel of Jesus Christ, the plan of life and salvation, has been restored to the earth. I rejoice that you and I have a knowledge of that gospel; and oh, may God help us to live it; may He fill our hearts with charity, with love, with forgiveness, with the desire to serve Him; and may we in very deed be Latter-day Saints, is my prayer and desire, and I ask it in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 82: May 6, 1920 The President spoke of the first vision to the Prophet a hundred years ago, and of the organization of the Church ten years later, and read from the Doctrine and Covenants of a revelation given to the father of the Prophet between those dates, in which the Lord said that a marvelous work and a wonder was about to come forth in the earth. He pointed to the facts of the growth and development of the Church in fulfilment of this prediction, facts that are now recognized and commented upon by statesmen and men of renown the world over, as they come to know the high character of the Latter-day Saints, and the nobility of the work they are doing. He commented upon the quality of patriotism which is so well known in every community of the saints, who stand everywhere as loyal, thrifty, law-abidin g people, good citizens and stalwart defenders of the civil and property rights of the people, always for law and order, against every form of vice and lawlessness. He declared that the Latter-day Saints will fellowship no plan to destroy the property of individuals, corporations or governments; nor support labor unions or other organizations in seeking to control or deny individuals in their right to labor and to enjoy its fruits and privileges. While men have the right to com bine and organize for their own betterment and protection, they have not the right to dictate and'restrain others who do not, from working for a living in peace and unmolested. The President con cluded his thrilling address with a fervent testimony to the divinity of the gospel and authority of the Priesthood restored to the earth, with all the keys and powers pertaining thereto, and declared that God is watching over His work and caring for His people. President Anthon H. Lund endorsed all the words the President had spoken. He referred to the assumption of the ignorant, and those who seek to oppose us, that Latter-day Saints are not Christians, and said our Articles of Faith are most explicit in their declaration of Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, as the Savior of the world; and that our people have been and are striving with all their might to get the true word of the Lord before all people. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 82: June 10, 1920 In February, 1843, a mention was made of the desire to have the Star issued twice a month, and an expression of the views of its subscribers solicited, with the statement that should the change be made, it would begin with the fourth volume, May lst, 1843. This, however, did not take place until two years later, with the beginning of the sixth volume. It continued then as a semi-monthly until the beginning of the 14th volume, January lst, 1852, since when it has been issued regularly once a week. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 82: January 1, 1920 Does it not seem, in reading these things, that it was indeed a period when darkness covered the earth and gross darkness the minds of the people? By contrast with the development Of the agencies of modern science, known and to be employed in 1920, and by the overthrow of much sectarian nonsense and bigotry, even at the loss of piety, if not of faith, in the present day, the plight of the world in 1820 seems almost as remote and obscure as before the Christian era. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 82: July 29, 1920 The multiplication of Church publications, each of the auxiliary associations having an organ for itself, and the practice of issuing the general conference proceedings in pamphlet form, containing full reports of all the discourses, combined with other causes, led to the discontinuance of the Journal of Discourses about the year 1886.
