Book Description
A story of two friends. A story which is medieval in its savage retribution. A story of chastity, purity, idealism and betrayal. A story of disguise and concealment. A story about the gods deserting his own men. Sujatha and Vedant are inseparable. With her faith in him, and the training of a devoted teacher, he blossoms. Eventually, a fork in the road takes the three of them on paths leading to different destinies. The backdrop to all their destinies is common — a horrible civil war that devastated an island nation. A Civil War. A war which would turn heaven into hell. As the life of an entire generation is snuffed out, the world with its short supply of compassion and sympathy simply turns a blind eye. In the perfectly random way that life is, Sujatha and Vedant find themselves at odds while love binds them to each other. And in a blazing charge towards victory, for a young Indian political leader, the wheel was surely coming to a full circle.

Book Description
This comprehensive volume provides uniquely diverse insights into various aspects of decentralization and development from both developed and developing countries, with special reference to Sri Lanka. For a quarter century, Sri Lanka was battered by its prolonged civil war, which ended in 2009, but has now achieved relative peace and stability. Having developed rapidly, Sri Lanka offers a classic example for developing countries. There is, however, a strong need, particularly in the context of postwar conflict, to formulate policies for reconciliation, peace building, and development at all levels—local, provincial, and national. Decentralization itself is not a new subject; however, how to devolve power to local administrative levels within a unitary system and how to link the devolved power to make local administrative systems more conducive to development and provide better services for citizens are challenging tasks in many countries. Taking into account the developmental, governance, and conciliatory needs and the sensitivity of central–local relations, this volume critically examines the local government systems in Sri Lanka. It also proposes a viable, effective and autonomous local-level administrative unit based, which draws on experiences from Japan and other countries, and identifies the role and functions of such a unit. The book presents commissioned papers from a three-year research project undertaken by internationally respected experts with financial support by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) under a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research.

Book Description
Marco Polo in 1298 described 'Seyllan' as the most beautiful island of it size in the world. The Greeks and Romans praised 'Taprobane' and 18th century travellers praised 'Serendip' from which name comes the word serendipity - the luck of the unexpected. So it was for Lord Naseby, then plain Michael Morris working in challenging Calcutta, to be told one Monday morning on 10 May1963 that he must go urgently to Colombo, Ceylon to handle a crisis. This book is a celebration of Lord Naseby's subsequent unique involvement with Sri Lanka, its people and its politics over the last fifty years. During that time he has visited the island at least 20 times. He has been an official observer at a number of Presidential and General Elections, witnessed the opening of the Victoria Dam as an official guest, supported the Sri Lanka Government and people through a near-thirty year civil war and was instrumental in the UK's aid response to the devastating Tsunami of 2004. Indeed a year later the President of Sri Lanka presented him with the nation's highest award for non- nationals the Sri Lanka Ratna (Titular). This book is a powerful memoir of one man's very special relationship with a beautiful island and its people, his recollections from fifty years of a unique friendship between a British politician and the people of Sri Lanka.

Book Description
The island of Ceilao occupied a permanent and singular place in the political imagination of early modern Portugal. Concurrently, the Portuguese left a strong imprint in the Sri Lankan collective memory of the period. Five centuries later, a group of historians, art historians, anthropologists, and linguists reflect on the multiple dimensions of this phenomenon by rethinking texts and maps, ruined churches and ivory caskets, oral tales and Creole communities. Authored by 15 international scholars, Re-exploring the Links is divided in four parts: "Political Realities and Cultural Imagination"; "Religion: Con. ict and Interaction"; "Space and Heritage: Construction, Representation"; "Language and Ethnicity, Identity and Memory". While published on the occasion of the Portuguese arrival in Sri Lanka five centuries ago, this book is far from being a celebratory piece. Re-exploring the Links does not conform to nationalist models of historical interpretation and refuses both the rhetoric of discovery and the rhetoric of aggression. The aim of the volume is not to celebrate "encounters", but to reinvent an academic debate, independent of any political agenda and concerning a history that is Portuguese and Sri Lankan alike.INTRODUCTORY ESSAYChandra R. de Silva, Portugal and Sri Lanka: Recent Trends in HistoriographyPOLITICAL REALITIES AND CULTURAL IMAGINATION S. Book Description
The peoples of Sri Lanka have participated in far-flung trading networks, religious formations, and Asian and European empires for millennia. This interdisciplinary volume sets out to draw Sri Lanka into the field of Asian and Global History by showing how the latest wave of scholarship has explored the island as a ‘crossroads’, a place defined by its openness to movement across the Indian Ocean.Experts in the history, archaeology, literature and art of the island from c.500 BCE to c.1850 CE use Lankan material to explore a number of pressing scholarly debates. They address these matters from their varied disciplinary perspectives and diverse array of sources, critically assessing concepts such as ethnicity, cosmopolitanism and localisation, and elucidating the subtle ways in which the foreign may be resisted and embraced at the same time. The individual chapters, and the volume as a whole, are a welcome addition to the history and historiography of Sri Lanka, as well as studies of the Indian Ocean region, kingship, colonialism, imperialism, and early modernity.
