Of all whom he had loved, this was the only creature remaining to him, and as he thought of it, life seemed very barren and empty, so that he almost regretted that he had not perished with the others. Above all, that last terrible cry of his daughter haunted him; he could not forget the reproachful look she had cast upon him, as he pushed her back into the swirling waters.
