Mr. Worcester's present book, which deals with the craft of the Yangtze Estuary, provides further striking evidence of the high degree of specialization in design and function achieved by Chinese shipbuilders. Steam and internal combustion engines, with their superior speed and economy, have already supplanted the sail and the oar on certain routes and in certain types of vessels, and these developments must inevitably continue, but even to-day an immense tonnage of cargo, and uncounted thousands of passengers, are carried by the junks and sampans described in this book. -- Prefactory note.

As Dr Needham's immense undertaking gathers momentum it has been found necessary to subdivide volumes into parts, each to be bound and published separately. The first part of Volume 4, already published, deals with the physical sciences; the second with the diverse applications of physics in the many branches of mechanical engineering; and the third will deal with civil and hydraulic engineering and nautical technology. With this part of Volume 4, then, we come to the application by the Chinese of physical principles in the control of forces and in the use of power; we cross the frontier separating tools from the machine. Chinese Outcasts shows that some Chinese were in fact treated as outcasts or semi-outcasts. They include the boat people of South China and certain less well-known groups in different regions, including the "musicians' households" and the "fallen people". The reasons for their inferior status and perceived impurity is examined, as well as the intent behind a series of imperial emancipation edicts in the 1720s and 30s. The edict provided an escape route from inferior legal status but failed to put a quick end to customary social discrimination.
